KIDabra July E-Newsletter
For best viewing goto: http://www.kidabra.org/vivvo/index.php/c......ter.html In this issue: Greetings and News KIDabra Journal News: Digital Extra! August Conference News Optional Biz Builders Seminars August 14th and 15th Catching the Magic of Pigeon Forge Conference Hotel Info Registration and Membership Details July Greetings! We hope this newsletter finds you busy. Many of us are indeed very busy with summer camps, library shows, fairs, festivals and more! That's a good thing! We have much KIDabra News to share, so here we go... The fantastic news at this moment if you're driving in for KIDabra Conference is that gas prices are really good. I'm hearing higher rates for flying this summer, however keep checking, as they will fluctuate, sometimes wildly, as you know. The Music Road is ready to roll out a great welcome for us, be sure and call the hotel for your reservations. Hotel info is below. By the way, there are also several conference videos below, and many more at the KIDabra International Members and Friends Page on Facebook, and of course at http://www.kidabra.org. Take some time and check them out! Somel folks have contacted us about roommate possibilities, we will do our best to help with that. Sharing a room is something I often do at conventions, and it makes expenses more affordable. And stretching a dollar these days is pretty important! If you are looking, email Tami at TamiDaniel@KIDabra.org and she will do her best to send a possibility your way. By the way, pets are not allowed at The Music Road Hotel and Inn. However we do know pet friendly hotels in the area, and we are happy to point you towards them. A Personal Daniel Family Note: Ok, but a little shaken! Some of you may know that we had a pretty scary event happen last month. This is the first time we've mentioned it publicly. On May 23rd a seemingly normal morning, the day after my birthday, became anything but. I was at home that day, got up early to see the boys off to school and go into town for a haircut. Tami had a headache that morning and slept in for a bit. A little while later Tami texted to let me know she was up and working in our home office. Around 10:00 am that morning she saw through the office window a well dressed gentleman walked up and he started knocking on the door and ringing the doorbell incessantly. After several minutes he walked around back and started again on the rear door. (Tami has a policy that she doesn't open the door for folks she doesn't know.) She felt something was out of place and started to call 911 emergency, as the guy kicked in the back door. A few seconds later, one of what we now believe were two men, came around the corner pointing a gun at her. She screamed the loudest she's ever screamed, she said, apparently startling the robber, who turned and fled stealing the laptop I run KIDabra with, off the dining room table. Tami barricaded herself in the bedroom and remained on the phone with 911 until officers and a neighbor (coincidentally with 911 arrived). She was on her cell with me and 911 simultaneously at one point, as things unfolded live. Talk about feeling helpless in the 10-15 minutes it took for me to get home! Officers, and a K-9 unit where everywhere when I got there. We would find out later that there was a massive manhunt in our part of the county as well as the neighboring county. A neighbor had described a vehicle leaving the scene and the Sheriffs Department and Highway Patrol were stopping folks all over the vicinity. Home invasions are bad enough, but add in a gun, and things get serious every direction. Detectives are still actively pursuing the case, althought there have been no arrests yet. The blessing is that Tami is physically fine, getting better emotionally the further we get away from the day. A lot of things went right that day, a lot of great folks helped out, however it pointed out some security weaknesses we are correcting. Please forgive us if you've asked questions that have gone unanswered in the last few weeks and please forgive me if I have to ask for answers to questions of you I already had answers to on my laptop, now being enjoyed by someone it doesn't belong to! The KIDabra Journal News Ipad and Iphone users absolutely love the new PDF version of the Journal. Dal Sanders Turning That Restaurant Gig Into A Restaurant SHOW - Many entertainers do walk around restaurant gigs when don't have a "regular" show booked or as away to prospect for shows. Over 30 years ago Dal Sanders recognized this and decided to find ways to bring comedy magic and family entertainment into new venues (restaurants and local businesses). Dal discovered a how to convert a restaurant into a "dinner theater" that would be advantageous to the business, the customers and to himself. He does hundreds of these shows every year. Yes, you read that right…hundreds of shows. The best part is you can charge more for a show than you can for table hopping. Catch the Magic of Pigeon Forge While at the conference, If you're visiting the Pigeon Forge area for the first time, do schedule a couple of extra days, there's tons to see and do. It's one of those rare places that really has a magical quality that you fall in love with. Both Terry Evanswood and I have similar stories of coming to the area as kids with our families on summer vacation and being drawn back year after year. I equate the fun to my Northern US Friends of taking the all the sights and sounds of the boardwalk at the Jersey Shore and dropping it into the mountains and add in Dolly Parton. For Rollercoaster enthusiasts the brand new Wild Eagle coaster at Dollywood is a must do. 200 feet tall/ 3127 feet long the coaster's eagle shaped vehicles allow you to soar on it's wing tips as if you're flying through the Great Smoky Mountains. Terry Evanswood's Show is walking distance from the Music Road Complex and is a must do. It's a terrific show from one of the most talented and nicest guys around! You have to walk right by the Titanic half scale model to get to the Wonderwork's upside down building which houses not only Terry's show but the family friendly and fun Science and Physics exhibits. Restaurants are everywhere in the immediate area. The Mellow Mushroom, Cracker Barrel, Chik-Fill-a, Olive Garden, Japanese, and Mexican foods are some of my close favorites! Now I'll reveal a big personal secret, the Pigeon Forge, Sevierville, Gatlinburg area is one of my favorite go to's for inspiration, and prop hunting when I'm building a show. Wandering up and down the strip going in and out of the amazing shops, restaurants and attractions is sensory overload in a good way! One of these days maybe you could talk Terry, Barry and I into a creative shopping tour. Wear good shoes though! And then there is the outlet shopping which is insane! I'm not just talking about for the ladies either, you should go on a whirlwind hunt like Jozo Bozo, Jeff Jones and my sons do for shoes and clothes:) Caution: The surroundings, the attractions, the music and the people may just be the magical mix to draw you back time and time again as well. Time well spent! The Music Road Hotel Complex hosts KIDabra Conference 2012
