Jim Lindsey, played by James Best is still around.

Did he play Gober Pyle, a relative of Jim Nabor's charachter?

No. Goober was player by George Lindsey. Jim Lindsey, the character played by James Best, was a local guitar player around Mayberry who ended up playing with Freddie Fleet and his Band with a Beat. The character appeared in two episodes of "The Andy Griffith Show".

My bad. I actually remember the episode when Jim Lindsey got arrested in Mayberry for playing too loud. I got him him confused with George Lindsey. Smile

That's pretty funny! What was his reaction??

He looked kind of puzzled for a second so I said "weren't you on an episode of the Bob Newhart show once?". And he said "Ha! You remember that huh? Yes I was!" (or something like that). I told him I liked the show and he was good in it. I believe that was done less than a year before Happy Days. He was on an episode of the Mary Tyler Moore show as well.

The Bob Newhart one is actually a very funny episode. He had a good role as one of Bobs patients with some funny lines. You can see it here.

Thanks for the link. I'll watch it in a bit.

Re: Goober - George Lindsey was from Jasper, AL, about 40 miles NW of Birmingham. Jim Nabors was from Sylacauga, about the same distance SE from B'ham. Each has a section of highway named for them, US 78 and US 280, respectively.

Jim Nabors's (see, I'm already transitioning with the apostrophe) real name is US 280?

Yep! US Grant just didn't bring the same sort of love down there.

Be careful... transitioning with apostrophes is still a punishable offense in Alabama.

It sure is a sad time in Mayberry.

Well, now, take down your fishin' pole and meet me at The Fishin' Hole,
We may not get a bite all day, but don't you rush away.

What a great place to rest your bones and mighty fine for skippin' stones,
You'll feel fresh as a lemonade, a-settin' in the shade.

Whether it's hot, whether it's cool, oh what a spot for whistlin' like a fool.

What a fine day to take a stroll and wander by The Fishin' Hole,
I can't think of a better way to pass the time o' day.

We'll have no need to call the roll when we get to The Fishin' Hole,
There'll be you, me, and Old Dog Trey, to doodle time away.

If we don't hook a perch or bass, we'll cool our toes in dewy grass,
Or else pull up a weed to chaw, and maybe set and jaw.

Hangin' around, takin' our ease, watchin' that hound a-scratchin' at his fleas.

Come on, take down your fishin' pole and meet me at The Fishin' Hole,
I can't think of a better way to pass the time o' day.
"You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one."

I won't forget you Robert.

Thanks for posting those lyrics. "The Fishin' Hole" was written by Everett Sloane, Earle Hagen and Herbert Spencer. Sloan and Hagen wrote the music and Spencer wrote the lyrics. Earle Hagen is the the whistler, Barney Kessel is the guitarist. (There have been others who claim to be the whistler on the recording, but Earle was given credit and also talked about it in his autobiography)

I wonder if the song was specifically written for The Andy Griffith Show, or just adapted to it? Andy later recorded a version with the lyrics. I wonder if the song had the lyrics from the onset?
