He's been shining for a while Al. Don't think he needs any such introduction, especially after having his effect somewhat exposed.

The only coins through a glass table that I'm familiar with is James Lewis' version and one a few years ago that used a
special penny and some other gimmicks. Couldn't find anything on it, so it must be off the market. |

Rather than carrying a small sheet of glass or plastic, I have always used a picture frame from which I visually remove the photo. This allows a spectator(s) to hold the glass without fear, keeps coins from sliding onto the floor and facilitates any coin concealment on the edge. Either an 8X10 or 11X14 can work -- a 5X7 might work with smaller hands. Naturally, you secure the glass in the frame more securely than from the thrift store.
In "TUC Appreciation" there is an incredible effect using this approach in which the photo of a famous person is wrapped into the story line and is the cause of the magic -- as if his ghost is effecting the very visual penetration.

That's a real nice storyline for this funsway. You're great at bringing the magic to life in that way.

That is brilliant That is exactly where I was hoping all this would go. Can anyone do a clip of ideas with this? David Neighbors? eatonmagic You are apparently a force in the biz. Could you demonstrate with this? Maybe this is a new product for Penguin? Al Schneider

I'm glad I did wait though. The response has been very positive. I'm not sure about a repetitive demo. I mean...you could I suppose but I really only saved it for those late night situations in the lobbies at conventions. I have a version where I did it with an ashtray as well. The ashtray is laid flat on the left hand and the same penetration takes place only the coin falls into their hand below the ashtray. And yes, Penguin was the first to carry the Drop'n Project. It was shot and produced by Jeff Kaylor (T.K.O, U.C.C.U) and the Magic Estate. For laypeople I do it pretty much anytime theres a solid glass table. If I tried this with a picture frame as mentioned above I could guarantee the glass would shatter. Maybe that gives another clue how it works ; ) |

There are two other advantages of using a picture frame:
1) you can speak of how people's view is restricted today to seeing the world in small-screen, either on TV or a computer or tablet, Start off by having several spectators observe your performance with the frame before their face. This way they have no expectation of what will occur when you shift to the penetration, perhaps on a theme of an "idea" coming from a photo into reality. PS -- a spectator with Directed Focus from peering though such a "window" is a ready "witness" for many effects -- and will be believed because he "saw it in TV" 2) you later remove the glass and use the empty frame as a "portal." Everyone knows that things change nature when going through a portal. Copper chnages to silver, silks change color, rings become unklinked, etc. as a "just now thought" -- why not use a computer Tablet for your penetration? With a little programming help the coin could be seen to visibly melt through the tablet glass to fall on the table. (Royalties mailed to me) There is already a "Coin from CellPhone" app -- how about a Tablet that eats solid object and spits them out?

Tempted to jump in the car and drive over to have a chat. Anyway. I am working on several ideas for this. It takes time. Some appear to be real good. Maybe Penguin would be interested? With all the heavies around here that seem to be on top of it, why aren't there videos of it? I will try and show some. Al Schneider

This is my favorite one. Very clever. Easy to carry. You can put a matt over the glass a preform a hole close-up sesion. At the end you take of the matt and do this effect. I think that Piedrahita use to do that.

When I was a kid in the 70's I owned a sort of little beautician's case thing about the size of a small, thin briefcase that had a clear, but non-glass top to it.
I carried my tricks in the case. It had compartments and my mom made a black velcro closing cover within it. I specialized in coin magic for the most part, and would simply leave the lid open, which had my name stenciled on it, when performing. One of the routines I got the most wonderment out of was passing coins through that lid as it sat vertically, using pretty standard means and two coins. It ought to be possible to find/create something similar for the effect today, given the huge numbers of containers around from various fields. A case like this suddenly let's it seem natural. No searching for glass doors where you happen to be....it's what you carry your stuff in. No need for happening-upon glass tables, or carrying obvious props just for the trick. Anyways, just my observation. This effect is as old as the hills- it's always been great. Everyone seems to want to do it today because some popular hotshots have featured this old chestnut in an extremely colorful way to big audiences- it's funny how a great presentation makes something seem new and exciting, and how folks forget the effect and the props have been around for a long time.
