I have incredible respect for Copperfield as a performer, director and businessman. He creates real theatrical magic the like of which I've rarely experienced. I saw him in 1999 and was transfixed by every moment. I was front row last year at MGM and I was disappointed.
Firstly, the ultimate sin: I witnessed the mechanics, which although inherently impressive, I'd prefer to remain backstage. The suspension of disbelief in a magicians' audience is a most tenuous line to reality. We struggle so to get audiences on our side, to forget about the 'tricks' and I'm always so disappointed when magicians sacrifice this 'ultimate' magic. I know magicians often write-off certain angles and a couple of audience members for certain effects in certain venues - for the 'greater good'. But when you're paying top dollar for a show ticket, and your experience is tainted by constant blatant exposure, simply because you've been placed at a dodgy angle; is that fair? Besides my consistently bad angles (especially for ('Through Steel' and 'Lottery car appearance), I was disappointed in his stage demeanour. As someone said, the spark wasn't there in my performance. And it wasn't only him, his entire stage crew looked glum and dissatisfied throughout the entire show. Copperfield is doing himself and his brand a complete disservice by performing on autopilot. It was quite sickening how every moment was moulded and completely overproduced not allowing the slightest possibility for spontaniety - from auto-cue, to LED cuing systems and scripts taped to the stage - I appreciate a smooth running and professional show, but am also aware that by removing all the real moments, you lose connection withyour audience - and surely that's the most important part of live performance? I'm still a fan, I'll just stick to his TV specials ... at least until they've finally decided to take a break and reassess. I hope that will happen sooner rather than later. |

I have so much respect for Copperfield, the artist, the creator, I just say that Copperfield the human is not in a good mood and shape. As Chad says, the spark is "dimmed". He'll get back on the horse one day.
And for the one asking, I'm a real illusionnist. I also work in a theater in my "spare" time. And I'm no union. |

I'll be seeing Copperfield this year. Hopefully it's a good show. There's no doubt in my mind it won't be.

I think a lot of this talk of the 'dimmed spark' etc is that most of us think of Copperfield from our memories of his tv specials. Then we compare him now to that guy from back then and it doesn't match.
We all get older and no matter how hard we fight it, time marches on. I don't think the show is any better or worse than when I saw him 20 years ago. I just think his style has changed. It has to to keep up with 'todays looks', or he risks not getting booked. Just my 2 cents. |

I have seen DC over a dozen times in my life and last time was 3 years ago. I can say that his magic has changed over time as expected because you need to reinvent yourself to stay with the times. His show just isn't energetic anymore. It's been the same show for at least 7 years now and it starts to get old and sometimes I wonder if David knows that and just doesn't have the drive anymore to create new illusions because it's so much work and stress. I now that he has thrown in an oldie here and there just to help make the show seem fresh. The last few times I have seen him, it seems that he is on auto pilot and everything is just scripted. DC was my idol growing up and I really do hope he comes out with some new kick *** illusions but I just don't see it happening. One day he will retire I just hope he goes out with a bang. I decided to give my 2 cents after reading what ChadFindlay had to say above because I agree with what he has to say.
