What do you do when the named card is near ot at the top or bottom? I mean, aesthetically speaking it doesn't look good.

Cut the deck

Nothing, just reveal it. It is possible thet the "chosen" card could have been "shuffled" there.

Cutting the deck is the obvious answer. I personally don't worry about it. I think the effect of this trick is strong enough that it doesn't make too much of a difference. Another thing, I find that certain cards are picked more often than others. Keep track of how many times a card is selected and place those common cards toward the center of the deck.

Place an ace on each side on top and tell them to make their selection an interesting and challenging card. Explain that it makes it too easy if they pick an ace as so many people pick those. Just a thought. Or cut the deck.

I would agree with Paul's thought. Direct them away from the aces.

I usually cut the deck, and it actually created the image in some people's minds that I made some kind of move, making it possible to amaze them a second time at a later date when I don't cut the deck.
A wonderful trick, this is. |

I don't cut the deck, I reveal it as it is. What I do is keep a 6 of clubs on one end and a 9 of clubs on the other end. The moon side of the deck is my **d side, so thus my 6 is there, and ***n side is the 9. I usually put the deck in their hand hand have both hands on it...always odd up. I just flip the hand over. Sometimes their hands get tired, and after I get the card, I just put thier hand on if it needs to be changed. There is something about having two cards on the deck that maximizes the effect.

Thanks for your replies. I find cutting the deck to take off some of the cleaninless of the effect. And revealing it near the top or bottom os not aesthethic. So, what option if left?

To my mind the sheer punch of ID or BW is the absolute simplicity - no cuts, no moves, no passes - nada.
If the chosen card is at the end, beginning... So what? Any moves for me complicate and create unneeded suspicions. I can't tell you how many specs, when recounting ID - mention and remember that there were zero "funny" moves.

I present the trick by putting the deck of cards on the table, and tell the spectator that we'll do the trick using our imaginations. I tell them to imagine shuffling the deck, and then imagine picking a card.
the two top cards in my ID are the king of diamonds and the queen of hearts. if they pick the queen of hearts for example, I'll say "now imagine putting your card as the top card in the deck". then I open the deck very cleanly, and it looks like their selected card jumped to the top. then I put the cards back in the pack, get them to select another card... then I say "imagine putting that card face down in the middle of the deck". so I actually like it when they pick the queen of hearts or the king of diamonds... because I get two effects out of it. the first being that their card jumps to the top... the second effect is that their second chosen card gets placed face down in the deck. if they pick the ace of spades for example, it'll be the card under the queen of hearts... so I say "imagine taking your ace of spades, and putting it face down as the second card in the deck... so all the cards are face up, except the second card, your ace of spades". then I can take the cards out and show them that the second card is face down and that it's the ace of spades. |
