1130pm Oregon time tonight I go out.
The Willamette river is right out my back door 200' away I have a light set up for bass/trout 12lb test. no lures for salmon, just bass and trout. I bought some 1/0 hooks and switched out the trebles on 2 of my 1" bass spinners today bought some glo dark anise scent, squirted some on the lure first cast 3-4 twists of the reel, and whoomp, something sucked my lure, it pulled left right went slack pulled right, then started to come back to me left and upriver, snap. wOw! what a feeling. f to losing a fish and lure. next lure same thing anise scent this time about 20 casts, and I get hit HARD. hook set. I'm fighting a huge fish, I'm excited, what is this, I'm thinking. after 10min..oh yeah, I'm in knee deep water, it's dark stars shining and no light. I can't see a thing. something about 2-3 foot long breaks the surface 5-6 foot in front of me jumping 3 foot out of the water all I see is a huge flash of silver, feel this thing hit my legs scaring the life out of me, seriously, my heart, the fear, excitement and snap, the lure is gone with my big fish. whaaat, not fair, no way. right now I can't stop shaking. I have no other lures. line is to old last time I went fishing for peacock bass was back in 2010 down in the amazon it's 1220 when I started writing. 1235pm now this is my first time fishing in Or |

The Illinois River is about 100 yards from my front door. This is is your introduction to the Asian Flying Carp. This is for real. These things will jump into your boat and will slap you stupid.

Have they been reported in the Willamette before? They seem to be dying out in the Missouri River, though.

I have no idea if it's the same species out there. I wasn't really trying to imply that. Around here though, they are quite infamous.

I love the rush of hooking into a big fish, especially when you don't know for sure what kind it is.
I know that feeling of shaking after losing a huge fish. One of the first times I ever hooked into a really big musky I was just a kid, alone in a boat, with hopelessly light tackle for the job. I worked the fish for about 10 minutes and got it next to the boat but I realized I was never going to be able to land it alone, and that it was just a matter of time before he broke me off. And that's exactly what he did. At least I got a good look at it. Get the proper gear and get back out there and catch one of those big boys! And post a pic! Good luck! |

That would get the heart going for sure.
My guess would be either a steelhead or a salmon. I know that they are both in the rivers right now. It sounds like you better get your salmon/steelhead tag, along with a more heavy duty pole along with some good line, at least 15 pound or so, and try it again. Bob. |

I'm used to fishing for largemouth bass in the South. Only time I went fishing in Wisconsin, my friend showed up with rods rigged with steel leader. I had no idea what I had gotten into, but it was a fun and exciting day fishing for Muskie and Pike.
Things are more like they are today than they've ever been before...

Yes Bob, I do have my license/tags, just need some good gear, been looking the last week for some deals
I used to be a saltwater kid growing up in HB, SoCal. in AZ I fished for largemouth bass at Lake Pleasant for over 10yrs, quite good I should say in Colorado nothing but gay bass(trout)never fly fished in CO now here in Or I'm ready for the fun stuff the stretch of the river I live on of known as the best in the world for fishing...chinook, sockeye, steelhead, even largemouth and smallmouth bass reports show these fish to be the best. I just got back from a drive up the McKenzie this morn. bought a few lures, line, etc, still need a decent deal on rod/reel that's today's goal |

Clinton, my grandpa back in the late 70's took me out for muskie back in Mich, I caught a 30" muskie
but the pics of grandpa and dad's fish from the 50's and 60's were monster fish. we're supposed to have sturgeon here also |

I lost a 30 plus pound salmon cuz a drunk crossed my line and thought 'release your line'meant yank. The line so you pull out the barbless hook.
Saw a bigger salmon get taken off a line by a sea lion on the same trip. |

Most serious musky hunters are pretty good about catch and release. That has changed a lot in my lifetime and it's great. I haven't kept one in 20 years or more and I used to fish them exclusively. You have huge sturgeon out there. We have them as well and I've seen some lunkers. But from what I understand the real monsters are in your neck of the woods. |
