So what were your favourite new releases at FISM this year?
Mine was Dave Penn's bottle production. I also bought Carey On but haven't watched it yet.

What's the bottle production like in real world performance?
I wasn't that impressed by the promo video. Seemed obvious as to where the bottle was coming from. I'd like to hear your thoughts.

Jamie, what aw your overall opinion of FISM? Was it exciting? Did you buy a lot of stuff or did you feel it was a let down?
Thanks, James

Not sure if you've already seen it, James, but there was some good daily coverage at Genii.

Like Bonnie Raitt said, "I miss Little Feat more than I miss being 8 years old." Thanks for the concerts + recordings, Lowell, Richie, and Paul!

I saw David do his bottle production. It was lovely. I haven't seen the video but I can imagine, for a magician, it might be easy to figure out where the bottle is coming from. But seeing it in real life, there is loads of misdirection. It is very obvious that David has worked this thing many, many, many times.

So other than Dave Penn's bottle production.
was there nothing Else ? I must say for a major convention it does appear to have very little Buzz on the Café ! |

The whole thing did feel like hard work at times as there was so much going on, it literally started at 8.30am and went through to 10.30pm. I really enjoyed some of the competition acts but there was also a lot of dross with much repetition and similar gags which made it hard going. The standout acts made it all worthwhile though - and were made to look even better when compared to the dross. The dealers hall felt strange as the dealers were in trade show booths rather than open tables. Combine this with so many people watching the competitions/lectures and I felt the dealers hall was missing the usual buzz. I was surprised at how few new releases there were. The DP BP is great and worth buying. The Carey DVD is also great. However, most of the other new tricks had been released earlier in the year - I already had most of them! The guy who has been writing the reviews on Genii I feel has been writing from an overly cynical viewpoint. It wasn’t as bad as he makes it sound. I agree that there were some bad/inappropriate acts at the gala shows and apart from a couple of minor problems the rest of the convention ran like clockwork. Also, Derek Lever seems to have picked up a lot of flak on the internet (he really shouldn't have aired his private issues in the brochure) but from what I saw he and his team were working their ***** off during the week. The most enjoyable thing as usual at this type of convention is meeting other magicians and having a good discussion/laugh. If I was asked to suggest one thing to change it would have been to build the whole convention around the competition acts rather than trying to do everything (lectures, buffet, gala shows, circus, dealers etc..), it’s just too much for one week! All in all I had an enjoyable week but currently feel completely 'magiced' out.

BBMs Ultimate Self Workers and The Revelations Project with Andi Gladwin were officially released at Blackpool and, of course, are very good, Owen Packard himself actually demed a few tricks from the self workers DVDs. I know that doesn't sound impressive but seeing as how Owen performs magic about as often as a solar eclipse, it was pretty amazing.
I know they are not that "new" but Chris Smith's Ignition and Twister Magic's bill to credit card were two standouts for me.

Jamie,
Thanks for taking time to reply, I would imagine you are seriously burned out. I mean Blackpool was not long ago then FISM! Crazy! Thank yo to all who replied. I have never had the chance to go to a convention. Would love to, just never had the chance. When Taiwan held the big convention last month. I was I Taipei for a martial arts seminar. I saw billboards with pictures of Levent and Max Maven! I could not believe it. I had aleady paid for my seminar, so no changing my mind. Oh well, next year!
