Why wouldn't people behind the counter understand what people in front of the counter were ordering? Seeing as they are in the same State and all? That was it, they weren't really. They might have lived here... but they weren't native "roedyeland" speakers. Quote:

Agree with Po Boy, but I think a Dagwood is a different kind of sandwich from a Po Boy, a hero, a submarine, a hoagie, or a grinder.
On the islands of the Eastern Shore, they use the word "ary." Weren't ary a thing wrong with that. Another southern expresion is "mash the button." LBJ used to say that, when questioned as to how hard he was fighting communism. "All I got to do is mash that button," he'd say. And do you wait "in line" or "on line"? |

In Canada and Britain you'd wait "in queue."

I've heard myself on show tapes saying "all y'all" but I guess I didn't pay it no nevermind. |

In Ontario, I will sometimes hear, "Where'd you come by that?" meaning, "Where did you get that from?"
In Newfoundland you will hear a number of different words. My favourite is when they add an "s" to "like," as in "Oh, I likes that!" Given a choice, I think I prefer to hear the charming southern "all y'all" to the eastern urban "yous guys." |

I've never actually heard anyone say "Youse guys" except in movies and on television, but I'm sure there are a lot of folks who say it.
Things are more like they are today than they've ever been before...

They have a version of that in Pittsburgh. "Yinz," as in "Yinz are welcome!"

In queue is common in manufacturing areas like silicon valley while in other places it is completely unknown.

There are a lot of differences in spelling, the obvious being "or" v "our" on the end of words like color or colour. But my favourite is "gaol" (British and Canadian) to the American "jail."

Further to gaol or jail. I believe that the American influence now has us in Canada also spelling it jail, but when my mother and sister both worked for the provincial courts in the 70's and 80's, it was still officially gaol in Ontario.

Y'all are making me realize I talk funny.
Trivia! The reason the Brits and pals use colour and theatre whilw in the US we use color and theater was when Webster was working on his dictionary that America needed a spelling difference than the UKsters so he used the 'er' on some words etc. |
