I know this sounds weird, but I want to be Britains next top comedy magician, someone who goes on television chat shows and panels etc, instead of a PROPER magician like Dynamo
Only problem is, I'm not hugely funny when things are scripted and I find it hard to create my own ideas without wanting to steal other peoples. I'm quite a funny person in real life, but I'm not sure I'd be able to make an audience laugh by getting tricks wrong, I just don't think they'd get my jokes etc. I've watched bits of Rune Klan, and he's hilarious and makes people laugh, but I don't think I could ever do what he does. Edit: Like, I'm watching bits of Tommy Cooper, and he is making people absolutely cry with laughter, yet his jokes are often one-liners which people today would just groan at instead of actually laugh, and some of his gags just wouldn't be funny these days I don't think. Hmm. Has anyone got any advice on how I should work on this? |

Write some stuff you find funny yourself, go to open mic nights and test it out.
Tommy was funny because Tommy was funny. I still laugh at his one-liners but it's because it's him saying them. |

By writing a sarcastic script to an effect you do well. It took me a while to work out who I was on-stage and how to approach it. If you really want your own original act you'll probably have to die a few times trying. There are no secrets to how, as it's different for everybody.

Sarcasm is a tough comedy sell.
Even tougher is wanting to be the next top comedy magician when you're not hugely funny with anything scripted, can't write anything that you can make work and don't feel able to make people laugh like, say, Rune Klan can. Take small steps my friend and as George suggests go out and work at it. Comedy isn't easy it's really very hard. It's mostly fan fail; fail fail...maybe succeed a bit... fail fail fail... maybe succeed a bit more. You take the successes and learn from what doesn't work and that's how you get better. But it takes time and perseverance and graft.
