Hi Guys
I'd just like to ask if any of you guys have put together a tried and tested set that appears to be very organic. E.G Magic that you do for real at a working paid strolling gig that appears to be totally organic. By this I mean using ordinary (or what appears to be ordinary objects) to perform impromptu magic (or seemingly impromptu) If so, I would love to hear about your top 7 effects that fit the bill. However they must fit the following criteria. 1 No cards, however you can adapt your business cards to use in place if you want to. 2 All the effects must be able to be done in the hands and everything must appear to be done in a very off the cuff sort of way 3 Props must be ordinary or ordinary looking 4 some of the effects must use borrowed objects. I will get the ball rolling with the following list (Not in any particular order) Flash Cash Ignition Crazy Man's Hand Cuffs Coins Across (Mr Clean Coins Across) Borrowed Coins 2 in the hand 1 in the pocket using bank notes / bills Captivated Signature Transposition Using Business Cards or Paper Napkins |

Some nice suggestions Dima. In Regards to Loops or ITR, how do find using it for strolling. E.G Does it break a lot or get tangled etc.

Loops are great, so practical for table hopping!
they don't break a lot, but get tangled more often (sometimes I just forget to take them off). I think if you are careful with them, they will last for long time. anyway, I have bought a lot of packages so I am not to worry losing them from time to time |

Question
What's the difference between cards and rubber bands? Both are normal objects that are found in many homes and both are props. Truly organic magic, in my opinion, would be taking a flower from an arrangement and destroying it then restoring it ... Or borrowing an object that vanishes but is found under the table cloth or in Someone's pocket. To me, organic magic is more akin to a state of mind, not an effect that appears impromptu. Just my three cents worth.

Hello Jay,
I would like to share my opinion (you can agree or disagree, it just my thoughts, I can be wrong). first, I love cards, I believe they can be a stronger tool than many other improvised or impromptu tricks. But there is a difference between cards and coins, rubber bands, etc. cards are related to magic, rubber bands, napkins, coins are not! (if you take out 5 half dollar coins no one will ask to shuffle them . the difference is more psychological, cards create a barrier to the spectator, they can´t really sure if your cards are normal or not, so it is easier to fool with deck of cards but harder to amaze, however if I take someone´s glasses and make them move, there is no such barrier as people know the magic has nothing to do with the prop! There is another great difference (let´s say between cards and money) despite that both are normal objects, laymans have less EXPERIENCE with a deck of cards while bills they handle on daily base. Magician can do a lot of cards moves and get away with it but any strange move with bills will arouse immediately suspicious. again, I love card magic but to amaze people with a deck of cards requires a serious approach on the part of the magician. |

What if the cards are the Bicycle cards made from recycled paper? Would that qualify as organic, or just green?
The way I see 'organic' magic (a term which can have a lot of interpretations) is magic that appears immediate and unplanned. A spontaneous display of magic brought about by the circumstance. A deck of cards could be organic if it's offered to you and you're asked to do a trick. You can plant the deck with someone ahead of time, but the moment seems to be at the request of the spectators, and therefore a spontaneous moment brought about, not by you, but by the circumstance you're in. Of course once you start performing you're going to be asked to do more, so it's good to have a good amount of impromptu magic in your bag of goodies. You can also create miracles by setting things up ahead of time, hiding things in the room to later produce, rigging up some gimmickry. That's if you have the opportunity to do such things unobserved, and if you have early access to your performing space.

When I'm working walk around or busking and approaching a group of ladies I always open with a ring production.
if I try to stop a group of ladies walking by with a card trick 9 times out of ten they just keep waking.... But if you ask them a question like."that's a beautiful ring where did you get it?" most of the time they will tell you. ladies love to talk about there jewelry and they will tell you all kinds of stuff because they are passionate about it. the most important part of this technique is to truly be interested in their answer and not cut them off as if you don't care. they will tell you how the ring once belonged to there grandmother or how they found it in a little shop while on vacation but whatever they say LISTEN!! When they are done I mention that their ring is much more beautiful then mine..but mine is invisible as I show my empty hand. (my ring a heavy band type is held in classic palm) then I say..."well its not always invisible sometimes if I shake my hand you can kinda see it" and the technique is fairly simple as I'm waving my hand back and forth toss the ring from CP into finger palm from their its a easy matter to get it on your finger. with a bit of practice this can be done quite quickly and is not that difficult, and from here their hooked and you can go right into a ring routine. what makes this organic is not the prop (although a ring is as common as you can get) what make this organic is the conversational mood you convey its not a show (at least at first) its a conversation. I also do something similar when busking if someone come by walking a dog, I ask "what type of dog is that?" Dog owners LOVE to talk about their dogs and they will tell you, I also have a squeaker I use in my cups and balls that I can use to make random things squeak for the dog this is usually good for a laugh and is a opening for conversation and conversation is the best opening for a performance |

Thanks a lot for your kind words, I really appreciate it!!! You are right, I have spend a lot of time scripting the routines, struggling that the impact of the magic won't be lost in the translation Cheers |

I enjoy playing naked every now and again. What I mean by that is showing up to a restaurant with NOTHING. I just walk in and for 2 hours, make magic with only things in my surroundings. It will make you a stronger entertainer. Trust me on that!

Sure thing Zombie! What it really makes you stronger at is those times when something happens and you have nothing! I got the idea about 4 years ago when I locked my keys in my car and my case was still inside and I had to start my shift in 5 minutes. I had to play the whole night off the cuff and was shocked at how well I did. Ever since then, I go in naked about 2 or 3 times a year to stay sharp. You'd really be surprised how much you can do with what's in your surroundings.
Bar Napkins Rings Keys Salt and Pepper Sugar Packets Borrowed Change Hair Bands etc It also helps you focus not so much on the magic, but on the "ENTERTAINING" which is really why folks should be coming to see you anyway...right?
