Well, I've read some more since last I posted here: Shaw's Plays Pleasant, Beckett's "Waiting for Godot", most recently- a compilation of eleven plays by Ibsen- including Hedda Gabler, foolsnobody. Started Moliere's "The Miser"/ "L'Avare". One thing I've found interesting is an overlapping of subject matter/theme, and repetition of character names by some of these playwrights, especially Ibsen, and one of the Irish- I think it was Synge mainly. "Write what you know." Interesting to see these variations on a theme. I'm not sure how useful it is really to read Ibsen translations- they seem to vary widely. I have a couple of Penguin Softcovers of 3 plays each of Ibsen's, most of which were covered in the eleven play compilation, so I'm going to read through the softcovers and see just what's there. My high school drama teacher gave me a gift of The complete works of Oscar Wilde several years ago, but not sure if I'll be getting through it very soon. Working on getting to it. Got a bunch of magic books to get through, too.

Hi Laurie,
Have you ever read Jean Racine? I saw a performance of his play "Phedre" in 1973. I've always been impressed, perhaps unduly, by his use of a very restricted vocabulary. It is said that Shakespeare used 21,000 words in his plays, and Racine perhaps as few as 1,000. (I've never counted, and one finds different figures quoted.) Of course, English has a gigantic vocabulary, unmatched by any other language, since we can use Anglo-Saxon, Scandinavian, French, and Latin root words for the same thing. |

It's interesting that the Christie play is different from her book. That's true of a number of her adaptations for the stage.
And of course we all know the original British title of "And Then There Were None..." Not very pleasant at all.

'Course, Lobo, maybe you meant you were gonna stay in and watch the Not very magical, still forum at the Magic Café.
I took a brief look through one of those Penguin Ibsen softcovers and perhaps, there's not such a great variation in translation, afterall. This one wanted to update for circa 1950 and made some changes in that direction. Changing a bonnet to a hat, etc. I think a lot of the content remained quite similar if not the same to the counterparts in the eleven play compilation I read, and so in two ways I'm wondering why bother? Leave some things the same as another translation and change others unnecessarily, in my opinion, so the plays can be produced around 1950 without "period costume". Kinda one extreme to the other. It's 2012 so I'm not sure I'll soon look much closer at the Penguin translations for the plays I've already read. I think there is one among them that I haven't yet read, though- "The Lady from the Sea", I think it's called. So I'll read that one shortly. I also have an old copy of, I think, an adaptation by Arthur Miller? of An Enemy of the People. I read it years ago, and took a quick peek into it the other day to compare and that's where I was perhaps misled. An adaption's a bit of a different animal than a translation and I didn't give that much consideration til later. More plays to read, but I've got library books out on loan to read through first. |
