Milwaukee Wisconsin:
Dear Folks; I just got word that this gentleman has just passed away. Because of him I got back into magic. Fred was a wonderful guy, helping out everyone he could. He was also into Magic for over 50 years. I know everyone is going to miss Fred. Fred, may you Rest In Peace. I know the whole magic community is going to miss you. Don, aka The Donster |

Don this is sad news. My family lives in Wisconsin and I would stop in the shop whenever I was home. He was a really great man and magician.
Is there a family member to send off a card? Erick |

WoW, Don, that is a real bummer. Theophilus is one of the largest small magic shops around, Fred was a great guy. I'll keep his family in my thoughts.

I know it is a Bummer. I'm going to the funeral Monday. The viewing will be at Max A Sass and sons on 60th and Layton then going over to 43rd and Good Hope Road I believe. Look in Sunday’s Journal for more info on the Funeral. I heard that Theopilus will be remaining open but call first to see if they're open. As for cards, I know there was a e-mail address which I'm working on to acquire. I'm also wondering if cards can be sent to the Shop. Don,

Well Don since the shop is attached to their house I'm sure you could send them there.

Though I met him once a year ago, I think we in the magic community have lost one of the nicest people in the world.

Fred taught me a very important lesson a few years ago. Don't buy a cheap flame from bare hands. He had two a $50 version and a $19. I went with the $19 and he told me that I would be injured and he REALLY did not want to sell it to me and I should buy the $50 version.
Forgetting at the time that he had my best interest in mind (rather than money) I insisted he sell me the $19. After some banter he finally sold it to me, knowing I would not give in. I took the darn things home, set them up, turned out the light, stood in front of a mirror and, well, set my hand and carpet on fire. He was right and had my best interest in mind after all. From that day on I never questioned him again. Shawn

Yes Fred knew his stuff quite well. I even bought a Sack-X from him back in May, I still have it in its wrapper still.

Wow...i can't believe it will be 5 years now sinse we lost such a great guy...i remember when I would come in shop and draw a 10, 20 or 30% discount from the small fish bowl he had on the counter...
I wonder what happened to his basement..i remember him telling me about putting a stage down there for performers to hold meetings or private shows and getting all vintage props to make it seem like a 40's nightclub...he was searching for a 1940's mic and all... whatta a nice guy he was...you will be missed greatly fred...may God rest your soul. Thanks don..will do...fred always gave me some sort of a discount..now that I remember he put a halloween sticker on his fishbowl with a neon orange post-it, I think he wrote Discount on it but not sure...
I haven't been back there in about 3 years..i'm going next year during summer-fest and pop in the store for old time sake..chokes me up alittle...good to hear the shop is still there and theater is still up....i can still picture him with his pack of smokes and his deck of cards...and the shop never smelled like cigs...the man was a stand up guy with tons of info and always shared his knowledge with you. junior

Nice to know all you folks remember him so fondly after all these years. He truly had an open heart to all aspiring magicians. Magic was and, always will be a part of my family. My son and I continue to perform in the Midwest region. I also try to promote acts as I am able. This was a big part of my Dad's early carrer as "Kai Jurgens Varieties". I think he had 8 or 9 acts. Well, thank you for keeping his memory alive and well.
Happy Holidays, Christopher Kai |
