I say, "I'd love to tell you, but they would kick me out of the magician's union".

"Very well" and "Can you keep a secret? So can I." and other hokey lines have been used by magicians all over the world for decades. They ARE funny, the first time you hear them and were probably first said by someone like Billy McComb or Johnny Thompson. They've become stock lines and yes, they occasionally come out of my mouth too. I find that when I use such a line for so long, eventually, something different, and more ME just comes out. I have a few that are suited to MY personal performing style, but I will tell you one that I got from a favorite TV show. I perform almost exclusively for adults, and would never say this to a child. There is a difference between someone saying "How did you do that?" and SERIOUSLY asking you..."Hey, how DID you do that?" The first is normally just a gut reaction, like laughter. These I usually ignore and just go on. BUT, I find that after I have produced fruit from under a cup, or named their thought of card, or made 25 sponge balls appear in their hand, sometimes they will get a VERY serious look on their face and look at you as if they ACTUALLY expect you to tell them. I stop and in a real deadpan voice say..."Now, let's just all stop for a moment, and think about how dumb that question really is." When delivered properly, everyone laughs and realizes of course the magician isn't going to tell you how he did it. You have to be very careful how to deliver it so not to sting the spectator.

Hi Bluemagic,
I usually say, " I can't, the gentlemen that showed me how to do this magic had me promise that I would never tell anyone how it was done, I can't break that promise". Mark

I got a funny line from the DVD "The Movie" by The Flicking Fingers.
When asked the question, I say; "Practice.....when I go home tonight, I'll practice in front of a mirror and when I make the coin appear, (or whatever) I say, "WOW" How in the heck did I do that???? and then I don't tell myself so I have no idea... This always gets a laugh for me and seems to satisfy the questioner.

I use to say :" Don't ask "how it's done?", but "Is it well done?"..."

(How did you do that?) "With these cards."
“Pretty well, don’t you think?” “I’m Satan.” "I have absolutely no idea!” “I don't know, it's never worked before.”
