Greetings,
Yes, Eugene Burger performed this bloody piece at one of the Invocationals/Weird Weekends. It's also on his Eugene Goes Bizarre video tape. Basically, tells a gruesome story of paying for his sins as he cuts himself bloodily with a straight razor. Believe there are also cards with burned pentagrams involved, but my memory is hazy given my current level of medication. Sam Haine

A simply beautiful presentation. I have performed it several times, with great results. (Not applause mind you, but rather the beautiful sound of stunned silence..maybe even with a scream or two thrown in!!)
If you choose to take on this effect, please realize that it must be performed as a stand-alone piece or as a closer. (I can't imagine anything more absurd than a performer slashing his arm open with a straight- razor, only to take a bow and go on to thier next effect!?!) Keith Jozsef |

Check out Eugene Burger's tape Eugene Goes Bizarre. There is a performance on there. No explanation, though you should be able to piece it together. You need to keep in mind that Eugene has always been pretty clear about what he considers "available" out of his repetoire. Not sure if he would consider this open game since he doesn't talk about the working at all. On the other hand, non of the methods are anything he created. All this being said, I love the effect but I wouldn't do it without talking to him first. There is the issue of the ethics AND the issue of whether you could be a good Eugene. Email him at magicbeard@aol.com. He's a very approachable guy and will let you know one way or the other. Good luck.

I know from his lecture that he said that if you own an original copy of his books or videos then you are welcome to do what is there.
Also, there are variations of this effect in both "The Experience of Magic" and "Mastering the Art of Magic". Rick

Clearly, if and when you choose to take on an effect like this, it is quote necessary to change the script to reflect your own personality. There is no way I could "sell" Eugene's word for word presentation, as it is meant to reflect a certain amount of his reality. (Maybe there was a particular restaurant owner with whom he was not very fond of. For me, it was a particularly annoying college professor I had.)--Altering a script to reflect one's own personality-- This, I believe, is one of the quintessential postulates on how to make bizarre magic more believeable and thus impactful for an audience.
