We sell close to 3000 wallets a month at our stores inside Universal Studios and remember..we're in Orlando, tourist capital of the world. We have literally a hundred tourists a week ask us this because it's a major concern when they're flying back home. We always tell them not to open it, keep it inside the package with their receipt and DO NOT put any lighter fluid on it whatsoever before flying. We haven't had one customer write or call us with a problem in 6 years. Even some of our customers return to out stores the next year saying that they were able to even fly with it in their back pocket. I will admit, I've had to go into some federal buildings and I lay it in the bowl while they scan my items and nothing is ever said. -Mike |

Short answer, Yes, you CAN fly with fire wallets.
I've had first hand experience with this as well as many friends who also use fire wallets as their regular wallets and have no trouble, one as recent as last week. I personally would no longer risk flying with one, as TSA is obsessed with taking away trivial items that "compromise national security." More than anything else, you'll find it depends on the mood of the TSA agents who are working at the checkpoint you go through. Lighters are permitted in carryons checked baggage, subject to certain terms, and a fire wallet is just that, so I don't see why they would have a problem with it. Lighter fluid is another story! Good luck! Kevin |

Thanks guys! I'm going to Vegas next week and I'm still a little iffy about flying with it! It is after all just a "lighter" but I'm scared I'll have it taken away!

We show 5 tricks in our show and have done it that way for 5 years. Besides our Levitator we probably sell more Svengali decks than anything. Between the Universal Studios location, Island of Adventure and St. Augustine stores, we sell approximately 10,000 decks per month. Just to give you a better understanding of our volume, here's a truck we receive once every 3 months. Keep in mind what you are seeing is JUST the back of a 40' container of which is filled top to bottom with Svengali Decks |

With all dangerous goods ask in advance. If you suppose you will transport your props on plane, ask the security officers if they can have a look at your props and give you advice. All this is without risk when you have some weeks time. They will tell you if they suppose electronic items to be suspicious or if some items do not comply with air safety rules. Very often items are not a problem when properly boxed and labelled. Artist luggage should look like artists luggage. That helps a lot.
Most magicians do not know the laws concerning explosives and weapons. Every property master must learn them. A magician should too. Flash paper like other pyrotechnics is an explosive by law. So bringing it to an airplane is a crime. Ask your magical dealer to ship it to your performance venue in advance. Flammable fluids are forbidden for good reasons. Use only containers/ flash pans/ fire wallets with removable fabric. The soaked fabric is the risk. The item with separate unused fabric is safe and can easily be identified to be safe. Weapon laws are strict. Knifes can be a huge problem. Imitation guns are a guarantee for trouble. Security officers can do their job much better if they have documents. A packing list with photographs and description of the items is well rewarded. The manuals for the items clearly identify them as props. |
