I was wondering if anyone performs a full view chain escape?
How long does the routine take? How do you keep the audience interested? Does it include an element of "danger"? What has been the general audience response? Instead of the 50 feet Rope Tie, why not 50 feet Chain Tie? Instead of knots, there will be padlocks. Metal chair instead of wooden chair... Any thoughts? Joe |

Joe,
I just received my copy of Micky Hades' Expanded Encyclopedia of Escapes, it mentions using chain instead of ropes. The idea is strategically placed padlocks (spirit locks). Personally I think it would be 1.)more dramatic with chain, 2.)more comfortable for the performer, you don't have to worry about rope burn. Seth |

Hi Seth,
Welcome to the Cafe. I haven't finished reading my copy of the Expanded Encyclopedia so I'll go look there now. I've been tied up in 25 feet of heavy duty chain (2"links). It weighs 30 pounds without the locks. Being in that much chain is not comfortable because of the weight. The chain also has the tendency of leaving blood blisters on your skin, unless you are wearing a coat. If I increased the length any more, I would have to go to smaller sized links to keep the weight manageable. Chain does look impressive to the audience. Try it on top of your straitjacket some time. It really adds to the look of the effect and it makes the challange even more fun for the escape artist. Thanks Seth! Joe |

Joe,
Thanks for the welcome. I like the idea of chain over rope also because of the weight. It pulls itself off of you almost. If you can drop it below your shoulders you are almost home free. I've also found out people think you are more helpless when chained rather than tied. I think there is always the idea of them thinking you cut the rope somehow, whether it is full view or not. One of david De'val's book recommends the chain escape. You have to be carefull not to select the "kinked" type of chain... if you think a rope burn is painful, wait till you find out what one of THESE things can do to your skin!
The problem with the chain, because of the weight, is keeping the thing ON! |
