Choices, choices. I was about to order "Neil Scryer and friends" when I got an email from Paul Voodini, offering "Room 237" and now I'm not sure anymore where my money should go. What should I do? Perhaps I should roll the bones.

What do you want to do? What kind of things do you do now? If you don't wish to be brutally honest in an open forum, and most would not, pm me and I will try to help. No-one wants to waste money, so you should certainly investigate 1st and spend 2nd. More info is needed. I you primarly seeking the bizarre?

Good questions.
I have a parlour/stage mentalism act that works (and sells). I also have a bizarre close-up act that works - I set up a table where 4 to 6 people can sit down with me and enjoy a 15 to 25 minute bizarre closeup act. Sort of like Tony Chris in his Karnival of Magick DVD. I get more demand for mentalism, but the responses to the bizarre act are very good and I enjoy doing it more than the mentalism. For the effects in the act, most of them make the audience the star. I'm more of a guide for them, helping them to have an extraordinary experience, then an all powerfull Svengali type showing of his incredible powers. I think both acts have good, solid effects and I'm not changing or adding anything when the latest "This is greatest mentalism effect ever!!" comes out. If I add or change anything, it has to be something special. Given the reputation of Neil Scryer and the price of the book, I think I can expect that from "... and Friends". I do have some of Paul Voodini's material as well and I like it. "Room 237" sounds like it's something very special, which is what I'm looking for. The thing is, as I'm sure most performers know, sometimes even very strong effects just don't work for you, because they don't fit your character/ personality. For instance, I can't do blindfold work. I discovered that there is something that I do that somehow, no matter how well I'm blindfolded, makes the audience say that I can see anyway. "Neil Scryer and Friends" contains material from different people which I think increases the odds of finding something in there that suits me, with appropiate tweaking to my persona of course. "Room 237" is Paul Voodini material only, but it sounds very strong and I have already incorporated some of his material in my act to my satisfaction. But it's a lot of money for something that might not work for me. What I'm primarly looking for is something unique for stage/ parlour that makes audience members the center of attention and gives them and experience they will not likely forget and I think a presentation with a bizarre magick slant will fit in nicely. |

Since you've used Paul's material before, you know the strength of it. I'd go with Rm. 237 but well, that's just like, my opinion, man. |

This is a simple choice, buy one and con your friends and family in to getting the other one for you as a holiday gift. That way you will have both before years end.
I personally do not have Room 327 but I have a couple of small items from its maker which are good and very interesting as his work is the type that grows fast on someone and becomes more enjoyable with each read. Now the Scryer book has a ton of stuff in it and there is no doubt you will find something you like and will use within its pages. It does not matter what style of work you do either it will be of some benefit, it could be something small that only uses every now and then like that wonderful idea from Sybil. Which I used more than once since I read it and it works very well and has proven its usefulness each and every time. Its not the sort of thing that many would have a venue or a time and place to use but if you do its gold. Now the Rich Hennessy contribution which I purchased a while back when it was a pdf release is very helpful and I find my self using it more and more this Halloween Season. Not to mention the writing that appears on the glass is looking much better and more believable than ever. I could go on for a very long time about whats in this book and how over the top some of it is. In short run a con and get both. Or just tell them what you want for Christmas, in my Family one must do a bit more work than ask or one will get yet another ugly sweater and I don't even wear sweaters. |

I would say that because of the variety in Scryer & Friends, it would likely be more practical because if the Voodini effect does not fit, you are ******. I like some of Pauls stuff too but at a lesser price. The Scryer book has a bit of something for everyone and that is both a strength and a weakness. I will say this - if you are comfortable with *mp devices, Neal has many good suggestiions for you, If not, then maybe not. There are many ideas though that get one thinking and often coming up with effects of your own using the seed idea from the book.
One recently released close up bizarre effect that you might want to check out is The Outcast Dead. You can find it at Lebabnon Circle, Prof BC section. I have it and like it, mainly because it has a great backstory and that it is different in that no cards, photos, books etc.. are involved. |

Well, I got a nice offer for Neil Scryer & Friends, so for now, that's it. That will probably mean that Room 237 will be sold out by the time I get the money to spend on it, but so be it. Another tome that is going to be the stuff of legend for me I'm afraid.
