Can you review Whit Haydn and Chef Anton’s "Fast & Loose" video?

I haven't seen the video but did see Whit lecture on this at the magi fest a few years ago. All I can say is that Whit was definately good at what he was doing but the idea just doesn't appeal to me. I just remember everything being really pricey. But if you like the trick itself, I can't imagine you'd find a better teaching medium.

I have both and of the two I like the Johnny Thompson. His performace is great and his instruction is pretty good. Don't get me wrong, I liked the Hayden tape but if I could only have one it would be the Thompson. Plus you get several other great tricks on the DVD!

Thanks guys. I have Johnny Thompson's video and I like it. From your words the two routines are quite the same. What I'm looking for is a kind of climax or a more magical approach to this trick. Have you found it somewhere?

The School for Scoundrels book and tape are designed to teach original methods for the Fast and Loose routine that enable it to work similar to the street conditions of a real con artist.
This makes it possible to do the scam as an exhibition at a casino night, Ren Faire, or trade show in which the routine continues as long as the performer requires, without the audience losing interest or getting wise. The hooks, come-ons, and psychology of the street con-artist are all explained and demonstrated, along with original methods of laying down the chain that enable the performer to set all possible patterns in one identical looking move--fast/fast, loose/loose, fast/loose, and loose/fast. The three routines contained in the book are mine, Jules Lenier's, and Chef Anton's. Of these three routines, mine is more a direct demonstration of the street swindle, Chef's is more magical in it's ending, and Jules' is the most economical in presentation and method. New ideas from Sophie Evans, Lee Earle, Gazzo and others are also contained in the book. The video is meant to accompany the book, and does not contain all of the material available in the book. Like our Three-Card Monte book and video, the Notes and Video on Fast and Loose are the class materials from our ground-breaking eight hour course taught at the Magic Castle's Magic University--the School for Scoundrels. This college level course has been taught to magician members of the Magic Castle every year since 1996. The chains that our company sells are a bit pricey, but they are a beautiful and deceptive french rope design, and stainless steel with a heavy finish in gold or nickel. They are lifetime guaranteed against breakage, tarnish, or chipping. This is why they are so expensive. They are designed for the professional performer, and guaranteed for life. The trick works well however with common ball chain, string, or rope. So the performer should experiment with the routine to see if it fits him before investing in the best quality chains available. Johnny Thompson has a wonderful routine for the chain, and has given the School for Scoundrels a lot of great input for our notes on Fast and Loose, for which we will be always grateful. We highly recommend his tape, but his routine and methods are very different from ours. Mark DeSouza also has a very fine tape on the endless chain--The Chain Gang--with much that is different from the versions on our or Thompson's tape. The booklets by George Blake (Loopy Loop), and Fred Lowe (The Super Chain), are the seminal works on the chain, and both take more of a magical take on the trick rather than the con game aspects of the original swindle. |

Wow, I feedback from the author. Thanks Whit for the details, I'm going to buy "Fast & Loose" as soon as possible because it looks like a pretty comprehensive treatise on the subject. And sure thanks William too.

I like the Fast & Lose concept: If you convert this video to DVD format I will buy it directly.

Whit, any word on when the school of scoundrel stuff will be rereleased on DVD format? I'm waiting on quite a few titles in the school for scoundrels library. Thanks!
