OK, I just saw the post with yet another shop with a ton of victorian style bizarre mini effects. Do not get me wrong, I like Victorian age stuff... and the whole zone actually of 1850-1950s feels really well covered by Outlaw, Lebanon, Alchemy Moon, and so on - and all the wonderful Voodini things etc. etc... and there are some nice middle ages pieces from Alchemy moon and Smoke and Mirrors I collected etc... but but....
Our field transcends and crosses all time and space.... So, based on this concept: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dogme_95 I am issuing a call and challenge to the creators out there to think about moving into other areas... and heck, I will ask the forces of Carcosa to come to help... and it is this: Next year, the Keeper and the Custodians will award a prize of actual material value in this space-time continuum (with input from the community on arguments of their favourites)- to the creators and producers of a bizarre/mystery/effect that follows these Dogme ES 252 principles: 1) The context is not based on anything involving the 19th and early 20th century.... WWII and on is allowed and anything before the Fox sisters. 2) Egypt is cool but has been well trodden upon by Ed Solomon and Warner and others... but it is allowed... same goes with Salem and Medieval witch times - but may not score as high as something from the Oracle of Delphi, the Ancient Horn of Lemuria, or the Cosmic Control Rod from the 47th century time traveller 3) The effect/routine/presentation still must resonate to have meaning and evoke reflection and meaning for the participants 4) If you must go for a doll - think golem or Hal 9000 5) It can be totally impractical for commercial use but it must be practical enough that it can actually be performed... no pipe dreams without actual execution. Note - creators do not formally need to apply for the contest. The forces of Carcosa will be watching and would ask anyone from the community to nominate their favourite items that are created starting NOW. It also may serve that we end up with a list of mystery creations that span from the beginning of time to the end of creation. If no one thinks this is of any value to do, that is also fine. The King in Yellow will just watch the world burn instead.

I agree in many, many ways... I think I started a thread in here about "why does it have to be old?" a while back...
I have a fair few plots and ideas for this kind of thing, so I will happily contribute something... is this also a challenge to yourself in some way, Doc S? will you give up your lovecraft, james and carcosa to step onto a new path?

I do think this is of value , a story teller would be foolish to turn his back on any avenue of inspiration.
I appreciate the freedom of choice, and have the seed of an idea I would like to pursue. Kotah |

Hi Iain,
Its been a challenge I adopted for years - in fact, Carcosa is part of it as it isn't tied specifically to any time zone - in fact, its essence is supposed to be decadent art and madness dimensions - so I'm happily using the Phantom of Truth as my muse. If you check out Carcosa everything on the site and its activities go beyond the Victorian age - and as people who have my work know - they are all over the time zones and across space too. I am releasing a limited run of Judge Holden's Sketchpad; Our Lady of Darkness - Paramental Visions; The Hob's Helmet; The Vengeance of the Inca Mummy.... I don't bother making anything from 1850s-1930s as they are already being made by others that I admire - but I have so many of their items, (and I will include nomagi like the HPLHS society that I have Angel's case, the Cthulhu statue trio etc) - I am hoping people I admire will make some cool stuff outside the usual time range I've noted around here... Oh James I don't have to give up either - for example, I believe my friend and colleague Prof BC's latest is something that goes back to demon medieval... before the Fox sisters... hee hee Anyway, I disqualify myself for the competition - but I try to walk the walk anyway... that is one of the reasons Carcosa exists - to create some inspiration and get the pot stirred once in a while... for the art on one hand and my fiendish selfish mystery collecting self on another hand... and for the King in Yellow on my other hand.

Restrained by time periods... I am thinking of objects from outside of our space-time continuum.

A Wrinkle in Time is a science fiction fantasy novel by Madeleine L'Engle. That is ripe for exploration. There is also the Alien mystery. Are we alone (I can assure you we are NOT!)? The Dulce underground base is getting to be known. I knew about that back in the 70's. I did have a security clearance. It is NOT just a bio-research facility! It goes more than 2 and a half MILES underground!
Then, we have other government black projects. Some, I cannot even HINT at. They know where I am. I'm too close to Togus. North of here, there is a military base that still has secrets! Then we have the Groom Lake facility. You know it as Area 51. We never called it that. I cannot say more. Think that would make a good candidate? I will say this: there IS such a place as S-4. And yes, THAT does go on there! Yes, they have quite a "collection". And no. They have NOT back-engineered them. They have NO clue! No, they are not flying them! They don't even know how to start one! 66 scientists and personnel did lose their lives trying to cut open the power source. Fact. I've said too much. Any of this give you some ideas? Doug |

Doctor, I think I may be able, in the new year, to convince the Wendy-Smith family to allow me to continue investigating those strange otherworldy clay sherds they have in their collection.

Something I have been working on is being witness to the birth of a ghost...the very first time a ghost gets to manifest itself...
Baby steps and all that... Set present day, no ouija required...

I am fine tuning an effect that meets this criteria. A few folks have seen it and a few more have experienced it.

An excellent endeavour. I've been reading some M.R. James essays and this secion seems relevant to the subject:
"Roughly speaking, the ghost should be a contemporary of the seer. Such was the elder Hamlet and such Jacob Marley. The latter I cite with confidence and in despite of critics, for, whatever may be urged against some parts of A Christmas Carol, it is, I hold, undeniable that the introduction, the advent, of Jacob Marley is tremendously effective. And be it observed that the setting in both these classic examples is contemporary and even ordinary. The ramparts of the Kronborg and the chambers of Ebenezer Scrooge were, to those who frequented them, features of every-day life. But there are exceptions to every rule. An ancient haunting can be made terrible and can be invested with actuality, but it will tax your best endeavours to forge the links between past and present in a satisfying way. And in any case there must be ordinary level-headed modern persons — Horatios — on the scene, such as the detective needs his Watson or his Hastings to play the part of the lay observer. Setting or environment, then, is to me a principal point, and the more readily appreciable the setting is to the ordinary reader the better. The other essential is that our ghost should make himself felt by gradual stirrings diffusing an atmosphere of uneasiness before the final flash or stab of horror." http://ebooks.adelaide.edu.au/j/james/mr......dix.html |

Thanks Joshua - exactly - H P Lovecraft didn't set his stories in the "roaring 20s" - that was his modern time.... same with Poe for many of his tales... same with Fritz Leiber... same with M R James...and so on... they knew that the juxtaposition of the unknown and mystery within the most realistic settings (here and now for them) created maximum impact for their stories...
