I don't know personally, but I'm pretty sure Solrak is from the NY area. Shoot him a PM, he'll likely have some ideas.

You'll never see a street performer in New York City do a 3 card monte or shell game.

Hey...sure PM me...(thanks Ekuth)...
Bobert use to be out there rather consistently but word has it that he went for the regular job so he's out there randomly at best in Central Park. I heard...just Sundays. There a couple of other guys that I know work TSQ...but PM me and I'll let you know whats up...

Times Square had a wonderful performer doing Bill abbott's The Thing. Not sure if he still gets out there.

I thought Times Square was more strict and had clamped down on buskers?

thought Times Square was more strict and had clamped down on buskers? Not really. Depends on the mood and size of your crowd in a particular area you are in. Basically, you can not block the path way. But there can be someone who will tell you to move on depending on the situation and or day. I work it myself, but not consistently. I wouldn't depend on it 100%. Quote:

I often thought of working the thing also; yet, I have not worked out the logistics and or workings of it. I mean, it's the street. There are, sometimes, random local guys who do something in TSQ as "street magic". No one is out in TSQ consistently except for your characters, naked cowboys, and other characters/statues.

"Street Magic" is quite easy to do in Times Square. Busking....not so easy. I was there a few years ago and this Busker showed up on 45th and Broadway. He set up his table and took out his linking rings and started to perform. The PoPo came right over and told him to leave.
It's confusing because the 'young' Naked Cowgirl can be out at 46th and Broadway, wearing just pasties and playing her guitar and getting a BIG crowd, take money for photos and the Police ignore her. Start doing magic in that same spot and you get pounced upon and told to leave. You could go down to 50th and Broadway with less hassle. They often have musicians playing in that area. |

Zombie, sound like you are from around the way...have you ever worked TSQ?
I also might know the guy you are talking about with the rings and table. He went to work indoors, but worked the cups and always started off with the rings. I remember him kicking off a show or two by the ticket stand and was told "because of the table" he needed a permit. Which isn't true...it's just what the cops say. He always got questioned about the table as they immediately thought he was a vendor...in TSQ that is. With that said, I work sidewalk show and if the conditions are right I do a half circle. "Street Magic", I've seen a couple of guys do, but they are the same ones that either say "don't tip me, I do it for free" or "there is no money in busking". Comparatively, in doing a proper show versus the trickle or "street magic", I think you make more. I'd rather do a proper show... Yes it is confusing, but it's random. The thing about the characters is that they move around. They are not in the same spot all the time. A magician usually stays in the same spot. Me, because my show is sidewalk show, I can move with ease. But I've seen no-one get crowds as big as the breakdancers...and sometimes (not all the time) they get shut down. You will get less hassles (if any) if you work beyond the range of 42-47th, but that's where the action is at if you are performing at night.

I heard Oprah Winfrey in her TV show years back use the phrase, "Random Acts of Kindness'. My take is that kindness shouldn't be random, it should be a constant attitude.
Sounds like in NYTS [[pronounced as NUTS??]there are random acts of hassles for Street Magic guys. That makes it difficult to figure out a pattern, except to say the pattern is 'Random'.
The presentation makes the magic.

Plus, you can build up a raport with the authority figures, which I've seen work... but at the very least you get to know is working and when and if they are cool or not... For example, I've been good on Thursday nights with no hassels. Yet on Friday night, I have to move from 42nd to 44th as they guy working there tends to ask me to move. The Alliance??? I've talked to them with varying results...do you have a contact?

Solrak29, I have performed in Times Square, but no table and it wasn't for money, so it can't be called busking. IF I had passed the hat, that would have been a different story. I just did it to experience it.
Robert Burck ( The Naked Cowboy ) works for the Times Square Association. They 'own" Times Square and call the shots, so it's hands off for the Police as far as he's concerned. The young Naked Cowgirl ( Lou Holmlund ) goes to college and returns for the summer. She has no affiliation with the TSA, but they let her "perform". Looks do get you perks in this life;-) Here's Lou: would you ask her to LEAVE? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RSwsgW6xoDk&feature=endscreen Sandy Kane is the 'older" Naked Cowgirl. sometimes the police chase her. Depends on their mood. Sandy on AGT: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0UkgAff25wc |

Y'know, I'm really getting annoyed by this. Either busking is allowed on the Square or it isn't. Being that he works for the Square, he should be following the rules more stringently than someone coming in not part of the organization.
And "who would harasses a cute girl like her with something as mundane as the rules everyone has to follow?" The hypocrisy is annoying.

Yes, I agree, it is very annoying.
Especially for the guys who try to make it full time in this area.

There were a group of guys doing magic there just the other day ,but they finished there show doing the old bead under the
soda can caps, many of the tourist there were losing the money in the game and then all H--L broke loose and police came out of nowhere and arrested everyone including some of the poor tourist. Where exactly does magic play a part in all of this ? but they did have a hugh crowd. |

I have not seen anyone run a game like that in a long while and I'm in TSQ quite
frequently...but then again...it can happen I guess... Meanwhile, I saw Antwan http://www.timessquaremagician.com working by the ticket booth last Thursday...
