In animal rescue circles, Happy Gotcha Day, is referred to: the date one adopted an animal from a shelter or rescue as often the animals actual birth is unknown.
In this case, I'm celebrating my five year "Gotcha Day" with my boy, Micky a one eyed feral who is now unrecognizable from the You Tube vid which I first watched in 2007. I remember clicking on the vid and couldn't stop thinking about this cat. I watched the vid for several days and finally contacted the woman in the video and said, "too bad you're so far away", but both of us were determined to make it happen that each of us drove to meet each other at a pre-determined meeting point. I still remember crossing the boarder on my return trip with him with all the necessary paperwork- vet checked/innoculations in place..ect.. The boarder guard was dubious I didn't spend a lot of money adopting him considering I drove hundreds of miles to get him. He insisted more money must have changed hands. I mean why would I have driven that far? I must have adopted a very expensive show cat. "Have a look", I said. He peered into the cage and handed back the paperwork and waved ne through. Micky now has a beautiful coat, lives a life of pampered luxury ...he's come a long way from the feral cat colony in a junk yard he used to live in. This is Micky's vid when I first viewed it in 2007. How could I have resisted that face! Besides, it's easy to watch as you know his story ended happily. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wj3uNrRHTiw Cheers! Chrystal |

Thanks everyone for the nice comments.
I know some folks might question whether this cat was a true feral, as usually dealing with them requires full body armor and long thick gloves. :O) Okay maybe not armor but you need gloves. Ferals are those who were born to mothers out in the wild and spend their lives with no or little human contact, Micky grew up in a junkyard with 25 other ferals. It's why this vid is so amazing - that woman, Jody is a cat angel!. Feral kittens can be domesticated with patience. I often was asked by the SPCA to work with the babies. It requires you wrap their little bodies up with a towel to prevent their claws from shredding you with only heads exposed and keep petting them while they hiss and spat. Eventually you hear a purr (can take aprox 2 wks) and they become sweet little kittens that are adoptable. Adults, like Micky who was aprox 2 are harder to tame but overtime they do get used to the person who feeds them and may come to you for pats...like Micky does now but you can't pick them up. (Had to do my public service announcements) :O) This pic shows him in 2008 after a year of recovery. He's now a chunky boy with such a beautiful long coat resembling a Turkish Angora. |

Thanks for the picture, Chrystal. Nice looking cat! He'd look great in a satin eyepatch on Talk Like a Pirate Day.

LOL I always say he's a sly cat who winks at people who come to visit him.
Here's a more recent pic of him enjoying the sun in an outdoor cat room I have attached to my "foster cat" room although he's a permanent resident. |
