Greg - yes, it usually is very friendly here, just don't joke. To everyone else - yes, the egos, definitely need to be left somewhere else so I can take back what I just said to Greg "just don't joke". It would seem odd when in a forum that relates to an art that uses comedy, one could not joke.

Yes, unfortunate about all this, Greg. I hope you are able to proceed unimpeeed with your quest to become a vent.

Dave,
One thing I teach kids in my anti-bully show is that calling someone names or saying something mean, then saying "It was just a joke" doesn't lessen the meanness of what was said. To me, that didn't seem to be a joke, it seemed to be a shot. To the original question of how to get better or to the next level, I would say invest in yourself or your education. Whatever form that takes - books, videos or Tom's course - all serve a purpose. I have told Tom that I think his course could be to a new generation of vents what the Maher course was to past generations.

When I started I explored all avenues. Stadelman's book is great! Winchell's book in combination with video is superb!!! Mark Wade had a great video (had it too) out for a while. What I like about Mark and Winchell's books are that they also explore manipulation a bit. What I would also suggest is watch everything BERGEN you can (it's all on youtube) and study manipulation, voices, and comedy timing from the master. Pay attention to how many laughs he is getting per minute. Bill Demar had some awesome videos as well. Just look into as much as you can. Everyone's mouth is different. That means, some substitutions will work better for YOU than for someone else, and vice versa. That is why it is good to try to learn as many different ways of doing things as you can to see what works best for you. Tom Ladshaw has quite a few great educational products and videos.
Tom, how long have you been a vent? I always like looking at new educational products so I will check into your course as well. |

Back when I was learning it, there were so few options to learn! I had Winchell's book and Alexander Van Rensselaer's (sp?) book and the Winchell show on TV and Edgar Bergen on "Do You Trust Your Wife" and lots of vents on Sullivan's show. There is, these days, an embarrassment of riches! Go with what feels best for you, Greg. There's an awful lot of great stuff out there.

Aw, shucks, guys! Thanks for the kudos about my video. I learned from the Maher Course (took it twice..first time the original one put out by Fred Maher on mimeograph (what's that?) form..second with Clinton Detweiler's improved version). However , Tom has a great product and I also loved the Stadelman book and Jimmy and Edgar Bergen's records. Folks...learn from all of these sources. Sometimes they overlap, but hey, make it a popsitive mix of vent info. Congrats to all who are advancing the art!

With the same fun and showmanship you always put out there and to Bluesman it doesn't really matter what form of learning you use as long as it delivers something useful to you. Heck to this day I still study many of the techniques of the art because at the end of the day if I want to do it well I'll keep on learning. |

I owe an apology to Dickens and Dave. I should have sent that message privately, and now I find I don't know how to delete my comment.
I am sorry Dave, and I also apologize to the group.

It's definitely an ongoing process and the learning _never_ stops...or at least, it shouldn't (if you're really serious about it). After half a century talking to dolls (as of next year, anyway), I'm _still_ discovering new things every day with regard to the puppeteering, acting, and technical aspects of vent. It never stops.

I would say the only real money worth investing in is getting yourself a professional dummy to work with. That truly is the only cost you need to worry about, you can search the net for free articles and videos and information about learning how to become a ventriloquist. As for books, the library is a good place to start. I picked up "Ventriloquism Made Easy" by Paul Stadelman which is a great place to start off. You might try to get your hands on either a copy of "Ventriloquism for Fun and Profit" by Paul Winchell (thought this is not easy to come by) and listening to Jimmy Nelson's "Instant Ventriloquism" record.
Once you do that, the next step is to master the substitution letters and bringing the dummy to life. After that, write a script. Make it funny, memorize it and perform it over and over again until it is second nature. It isn't as hard to learn how to do it, you just need to learn to be funny. Side note: Don't copy others, how many times have I heard somebody use, "I'm sorry you're ugly!" to the point that I can't stand hearing that act at all. You want to be original as possible. Don't put off your dream any longer. I did that too. Now I am playing catch up. |
