I just took yet another personality test. They always come out to be ISTJ- Introvert, Sensor, Thinker, Judger, which is based on Jung's theories.
Do most magicians fall under a certain personality type? What personality type are you? I'm curious to see if our answers will begin to show a pattern. |

I'd tell you but I'm too introverted.

According to this link, ESFP would be the most common MB personality type. Hudson |

One thing that really gets overlooked in discussions of the MB is Jung's ideas on the different levels of personality. The MB test measures a person's ego, the person's "I." You also have another layer, a mask that you show people, which mediates between you and other people. I'm extremely introverted, but almost all my jobs, from bank teller to call center to now teaching require me to be really extroverted, so I have a really, really good extroverted mask - to the point I almost think of myself as two separate people. People that know me casually assume I'm an extrovert, but at the end of the day, I'm usually pretty mentally wiped and need time just to myself to recover. Likewise, a, say, extroverted academic is probably going to have a really good introverted mask, and a perceiving policeman will have a very strong judging mask.
I'd guess that most magicians, like most people, are extroverted, but I'd bet a lot of magicians are introverted with a very strong extroverted persona-mask. People who are introverted are going to be naturally inclined to the hours of solitary practice, while the mask would be required for the performance. |

While Dr. Phil probably wouldn’t go nine rounds with Jung, he’s talked several times with celebrities who are actually very shy. The “performance” is their personal vehicle for expression, because they often don’t know how to be heard otherwise. The OP has an interesting combo for being here. ISTJ’s are not known to be daring or spontaneous, more the responsible type. A career in entertainment is definitely not in the majority. I switch between INTJ (Mastermind) and INFJ (Counselor) depending largely on mood. This also is not a big boost to the “performer” side of things, but when you start looking at the “shadow functions” it paints a little different picture. I’ve learned to enjoy the stress on being “on” because it does activate these other “powers”. I’d bet that if we could get a true picture of magicians (and, yes, I think mentalists would be a different but similar picture) we’d probably find a large number of people who use their magic to cover or at least supplement a (real or imagined) lack in social skills.

Also, just a thought on the Introvert / Extrovert thing. In American culture it’s been very popular to characterize the Extro as being the outgoing, gregarious glad-hander making all the social rounds, while the Intro is pictured as a reclusive loner, possibly hiding many “secrets”. I’ve gotten to study this close up with two growing boys, classic depictions of each. The Intro isn’t “socially incapable” at all; he’s quite well balanced and able to handle himself alone or in the company of others. It’s the Extro that I feel sorry for; when he’s not able to “interact with his environment” aka other people, he is totally adrift, “bored” and has no idea how to conduct himself.
What’s involved is not “social ability” at all; it’s the energy flow. An Extro gets recharged by interactions, whereas the Intro is drained by them and will need some time alone to recharge. Probably MANY of us can identify!

I have never taken one of these tests before, but I always assumed I was an extrovert, and I almost never needed "recharge time". However now that I perform on a regular basis I find I am not more of an introvert, and it is often I need time to myself.
It's also odd because I often space out and drift off into my own little world, deep in thought, and will have no idea of what is going on around me, until my girlfriend throws Mark Wilsons book at my head, smacking me back to reality. Is this self hypnosis? I know I have a very bad case of highway hypnosis, in which I will be able to drive from my home to work, or the magic shop, but I will have no recollection of the actual travel. My subconscious takes over the driving, while my conscious mind goes deep in thought. It’s kind of creepy, but this is also when I think of new lines, material, and ideas for my shows.

I think only my Family, Friends and Co-Workers could tell what type of personality I have. I don't have a lot of faith in tests.
Family and Friends would probably only tell me my good qualities. Co-Workers would probably tend to do the same for fear of being sent to HR. I think Magician's and those practicing to be Magician's (myself) are no different than the rest of the population. A mixed bag of personality types. Iven

Hi Eric,
I was a massive introvert growing up as a kid all through out high school and for most parts of university. After a few years of really focusing on the showmanship side of magic I believe I really developed not only as a performer but as a person. I started to realise that for me to become a great performer, I needed to do just that I had to become who I wanted to be, rather than always act out to be that person. To be honest with you this has really changed my life, in becoming the person I want to be it has taken me so far out of my comfort zone that I have done things I have never done before and as a result I have accomplished things I never though I'd accomplish. I guess what I am trying to say here is no matter what your personality type, I think anyone can change and be the person/showman they want to be. I meet a lot of magicians who just believe they have the wrong personality for magic etc, and I just believe this is simply not true. Great topic though Eric!

Having taken many psych test for employment purpose, I have always been suspicious of these. I have read some report that I could really identify with, and some that seems way far off my personality.
Regarding magic, I would not be surprised to find all kind of personnalities in performers. There are so many ways of performing/acting that any personality type can be represented. I don't know many professional magicians, but I had seen many actors in their private life, and I have seen the all spectrum of personnalities with some extremes that are completely opposite to the usual characters they are playing on screen. |

I am INFP and have been interested in this test for many years.
As for being a magician, I get a huge thrill out of performing, but once my time is done I am seeking quiet time to myself to recharge. I can get flustered if I have to interact with people for hours at a time. All magician types are unique, for example look at the difference between high energy vs quieter mysterious performers.
