Look online?
Visit a local shop? Sift through all the books and DVDs you have for inspiration or an established routine? Start with a clean slate and try to develop an effect or routine on your own? Seek out a friend or Mentor to assist? What has brought you the most success? Disappointment? Why?

Usually all of the above (minus the local shop one).
I start out by coming up with something on my own, followed by research online and books to check for originality, then I hone it by showing it to friends. |

BobbyHasbun,
When showing it to friends do you mean fellow performers, laypeople or both to get a balanced perspective?

First magic friends for technical advice, then regular people to gauge its strength. Then back to the magic friends for tweaking based on the laypeople reactions.

Sounds like a great game plan. Then back to the laypeople to see how the tweaking effects the response.

Often for me it is when I have a premise or theme for a routine and then I look around to see what could be adapted to fit that.

I like to toss it by the folks here at the Café for their opinion. USUALLY the responses are very helpful. However, there are a couple of folks who seem to get their jollies by tearing everyone else down.
Once you figure out who they are, though...you just ignore them.

Mike don't let it bother you, the ones tearing people down, the so called
keepers of the flame usually don't amount to much either in skill , knowledge or experience. Look at all the expert magicians teaching magic on you tube. Lol |

Johnny,
Good idea. Do you mean you look through your own effects or new stuf? Mike, You always have to consider the source when taking advice. Renzo, This is truth far more than it is fiction.

Ummmmmm, Max:
You ask some great questions about adding new effects.... By this do you mean adding effects that are new in and of themselves or, rather, are new to you, the performer, as part of your typical performing routine? I hate to try and answer a question with another question, but I think the question needs some clarification. Part of the reason I ask this, in return, is that it is my experience that there are VERY few effects that are new in and of themselves...most effects that are advertised as "New" tend to be "re-packaged", "re-marketed", or "improved" versions of effects that have already been released. Some of those effects that are improved based on developments in technology may be significant enough that they become IMPORTANT enough to consider using in one's performances, if conditions merit it. Otherwise, if I were to add "New Material", it would tend to be what my experience tells me that I need to craft for a particular set of performing venues that I would be targeting. Case in point: Effects/Routines that will WORK in constructing a 30 Minute Casino Act as an opening act for Touring Rock Acts who perform in Casinos. To me, this is "slice-it-thin" show-biz reverse-engineering Does that make sense? |

To clarify I mean effects that are new to you, the performer but I guess they could also be "new" in general as well.
I completely agree about the new being based on the old as well. It is very difficult to come up with completely new and original concepts. I also agree that you do have to consider what it is that you are trying to gain from adding said new effects or routines. Most of us have more than enough magic, books, dvd's etc to last us many lifetimes but alas we always succumb to the stuff that fools us in hopes of creating the ultimate magic performance only to realize all too late that we have the ability to create the ultimate performance with anything we touch given enough time and dedication. The reason there is a market for new magic is we gotta have the latest and greatest and most of us have the magic attention span of...Squirrel!

The real question is, are we really looking for a new effect or are we getting ourselves toys? I know myself, I have quite a bit of junk drawer magic, things I will never do but bought on liking the effect because it looked fun to play with. Is there anything wrong with that... not really, it helps keep the economy going In today's electronic age, the internet has opened doors to getting these toys. Brick and mortars are becoming scarce, the local magic club conventions are becoming far and few between because of the costs involved which also has made it more difficult for the smaller brick and mortars (IMHO)
Though I do know that some of those toys I have purchased, I have placed in a drawer, sometimes I have thoughts and ideas for different effects or presentations later on down the road. There have been times that I have bought something because I felt that there was more to the 'toy' than what it was being marketed as. Please note, this is from a hobbyist/sometime professional view. A full time professional will have different thoughts and views, has a constant change in audience, knows what works for themselves, and will get things knowingly that will make their show better. I would be willing to say that they too get their 'toys' that are not going into their show or routine, but gives them something new to play with. If it were not for those toys, would there be new effects or routines to peddle? |

Another great point of view. Thanks, Wravyn.

Great question. As an amateur performer, I really appreciate commercially available magic sources, such as your own dvds. I really like to watch the pros and then rework the story lines an different ways to involve an audience. I also like to combine things from different sources. For example, I have a routine that incorporates the birthday detector diary by chris hare with zodiak be chris ballinger.

That is the kind of answer I am always happy to see. Great thinking!
