As corindaman says:
«Can you keep a secret?... So can I!» is my favorite answer. Take your time when asking your question, look your spectator in the eye with a mysterious look. You'll see the flame in the eye of the person, ready to hear the secret without repeating it to anybody (even if everybody is suddenly quite and listen to your conversation). «So can I» always make everybody laugh. A few shows back, someone answered me «no». I was dismounted. |

I love the response that Slydini makes in Dick Cavett show end of his coin routine.
"How did you do that?" "How did I do it?" "Yes!" "I don't even know myself." |

Sometimes spectators aren't really asking "How did you do that?" when they respond to your magic with "How did you do that?!?!?!?" I think it's important to determine the difference. The instance everyone is talking about (and much good advice has already been given on that) is the actual request for information on how the trick is done. But I do believe many spectators are simply expressing amazement when they shout "How did you do that?!?!?" while they are examining the sponge balls in their hands. This isn't a request for information. I ignore the text of their exclamation and respond to their meaning with something like, "I know! Right?!?!?" So no need to be defensive every time someone exclaims, "How did you do that?!?"

Great advice! Here's a few I like:
"Very carefully" "Come back tomorrow and I'll tell you" "That's a great question, but please submit all questions in writing." "I learned it from an old dog" (If probed more "I don't know how to explain it, my dog died." |

Shawn Farquhar had a really funny way to deal with it too...
he says: "do you know how to keep a secret: spectator: "yea, sure!" you: "so do I!" I use it too, and it always gets good laughs, and people back off. |
