So yes, I think it appropriate to call for his dismissal and No, I don't think it abridges his first amendment rights. There have been other cases in the news where people have lost their jobs for saying things that reflected badly on the company. Remember the guy who berated the worker at a fast food joint and posted the video online. Fired. I don't remember anyone arguing that his first amendment rights were violated. How about if it became public that one of the teachers at your college was a member of the Westboro Baptist church and was actively doing their little protest thing at the funerals for the kids killed in the recent school shooting? You really wouldn't ask for thier dismissal? |

You must be as old as the first temple. For as long as I can remember boxing ALWAYS had more than one champion. That was always the knock on boxing.

Assuming one had a gun. And just because the lama said it doesn't mean anything. He also said that one monk, I forfot his name, (he was either a 16th/17th century monk) was evil whilst many believed him others remain steadfast that the monk was a deity (good). So basically he divided a people already in exile.

Rockwall-
I see your point. The question is whether or not the University of Rhode Island is a state owned institution. If it is, I believe the First Amendment argument could be made. Good thoughts, Bob |

Do you really think ANY state owned institution would allow a member of the Westboro Baptist Church to stay employed there once it became public knowledge?
hmmm, maybe I've got to think about that. There may be some, but I doubt an educational institution would be one of them. |

And this is one of his official university pages: http://www.uri.edu/artsci/his/Erik_Loomis.html Apparently he is a fairly recent PhD, a junior faculty member, a presently nontenured Assistant Professor. I don't know anything else about him. Given how difficult academic jobs are these days in areas like history / political science, I'm surprised that he is so vocal in his opinions prior to tenure. An associate of his writes about Loomis' situation here: http://crookedtimber.org/2012/12/19/stat......-loomis/ There may be some details of the case there of interest to some here.
