I have finished filming my strolling magic, now before editing I would like to see samples of some promo of strolling magic, just for inspiration and to explain my camera-man, what I need.
can you share some good show-reel videos of strolling magic (it can be done in bars, restaurants, anywhere!) thanks |

Hi Dimitri. I'd suggest that you google close-up, walk-around, restaurant, wedding, and corporate magician. That should generate a list of magicians fitting these categories. Some of them will have a "show reel" on their site. It may even be faster if you did this search in Youtube. The one on my site just shows clips of my kid show. Good luck.

This is some mixed footage; balloons and magic. For this, the idea was to show the reactions. I'm not a film expert (or amateur for that matter) but I don't think you want full performances. You probably don't want to reveal your whole walk-around set on a YouTube video.

If it is for a client, you want to show them just enough to get them to want to buy. Reactions are important but so is your personality. You want them to think "wow it would be great if my guests were having that much fun".
I am not a fan of incomplete tricks. Obviously some will be on there, but seriously you do need to show that you can complete at least one trick during the video. I haven't watched any posted here, but I am also not really a fan of the whole have the spectaters say how great you are on the way out thing. I have always thought a picture was worth a thousand words, and a video was worth even more. Why spend video with a guy saying how great you are, when you can spend that video time SHOWING them how great you are? Like anything if properly used they are perfectly fine, and accent the video. But in the past few years there has been a trend to just be WAY too heavy handed with that sort of thing. The reason is it is easier to get good footage of that sort of thing than of actual performance. If you are going to shoot one here is the best way. STORYBOARD what it is you want to happen before you even think of shooting. Then instead of shooting it all in one night, you make those spacific moments happen over different performances. You will end up with FANTASTIC footage and not have to fight to find what moments sort of fit in. This is the way they make movies, so there must be something to the idea. It will take longer to do, but it will give you a video that is worth watching.

Dimitri,
As a producer/director for more than 25 years... I offer my two cents: The best advice is to get a pro to shoot and edit your demo. Use a good video camera, good audio; ensure the video is well-lit and in focus. These are the bedrocks of making you look great. Length: If you can't sell yourself within in a couple of minutes (less than three), you won't have any luck with a longer demo reel. Story-boarding... here's one example (you may wnt to do something different): 1. Quick title (Name/logo). 2. Hook them with something flashy within the first 30 seconds. This is do or die time. 3. If you do pure manipulation, limit that to 30 seconds. 4. Show people being amused/entertained for about a minute. Save your "signature effects" for actual performance. 5. End the demo with your contact info. Editing... Multiple angles, no "shaky cam" and add audience reactions (real, please). It doesn't need to foloow this step, by step... but it is a place for you to start. Background music can add a lot, as well. Test you demo on current/past satisfied clients. Ask these questions: 1. Do they think it truthfully represents you? 2. Would this have helped them select your act? 3. Can you quote them? You don't need live testimonials (think of the commercials for upcoming moves: "Best show in years - LA Times"). 4. Do they have any suggestions? You don't need to do what they suggest, but you need to listen. Six people all saying they couldn't follow something probably means it needs to be fixed. Remember, it's not about that you like (or even what other magicians like), it's about what the potential audience likes. Best of luck. Dave
Yes, I am a magician. No I did not make my hare (hair) disappear... it just took early retirement.
