I am a little confused about the definitions for the various types of performances and how much they overlap. Can any one offer some clear descriptions of the difference between the various types of performance? Stage, Close-up, Parlor etc, it seems to me that the close up presentations often happen on a stage. Troppo Bob |

I would define close-up as any magic where the spectators are close to you, say up to 10 feet away, and standing in a huddle. This kind of performance usually uses small props like regular-size cards, coins, etc. Stage magic usually involves large props (sawing in half, linking rings, etc.) that can be seen from a distance and the spectators are usually farther from you and seated. Parlor magic is kind of a mix of the two, like a birthday party, where your spectators are seated, but still close enough to be able to see you produce a silk from your hand. Anyone else want to agree/disagree? This is the way I understand these terms.

Most competitions are either "Close-Up" or "Stage". Fairly cut and dry.
