How often do you write/create?
Is it now and then, every day, a certain time, once in a blue moon? What stimulates you to write, when you don't want to? Harris still a practicing laughologist not comedian...since it is not all funny aka dr. laugh

How often?... Not often enough.
I will sit down and write endlessly if I have a project that I'm working on. Generally I need a shove to start writing though. In recent years I've been lucky to get this shove from working with another performer and writing material for them. Having a deadline or a problem to solve provides the motivation for the writing and once I start I've discovered that, to my surprise, I'm pretty good at it. But without that shove, that motivation, getting going from scratch is something I find pretty hard. This is particularly so if writing for myself as there's then no imperative to get anything done. Writing for someone else suddenly puts you in the position of having to engage in being creative on demand. In a way it's frustrating knowing that I can write good material and create routines and presentations for various effects and do it well.... but I don't. Over the holidays I put together a couple of new complete routines with a view to possibly adding them to my show. All of the construction and physical materials has been sorted out... but despite the work I've put into getting these effects up and ready I haven't even looked at writing scripts for either of these effects. The thought of it makes me look for something else to do... but strangely, I know that if the performer that I write material for was to present me with the same effects in need of a script I'd be merrily rattling material out into the wee small hours. Go figure?

I can come up with great story lines, but I am horrible at making them fit into a routine. So I have a professional writer hone material for me. I provide the clay, and he turns it into pottery gold!

Rewriting and taking the material out for test drives during shows.
My writing, improv and show quality go up as the time before an audience goes up. My listening and cutting skills are just as important as the word. I have a new bit with my ukulele playing a certain song. It works well with an older crowd. Tried it with a younger group, and found after 12 seconds I needed to change gears. My wife is one of the people I go to and trust to "hone material". For me I also go to prayer and meditation...as well as artist outings.(The Artist Way ..a great book full of great exercises) Harris laughologist and nearly normal righter
