Ok, sorry for hijacking the EVP thread with a groae.
But actually for the bizarrist a good knowledge of etymology (and entomolgy) is very useful. And it makes for genuinely interesting scripting for an intelligent audience. I'm sure many of you have your favourites and I relish hearing them here. To get the ball started here are some of mine: Influenza - the flu. Which I got last month :-( from the belief that it was the "influence" of Saturn. Saturn/santurnus/santhanus/satan... Hysteria - the belief that the womb moved around the female body and produced all manner of (now recognised as psychosomatic) symptoms. Angina - the chest pain you get prior to a performance? Well it comes from the Greek for strangulation. However in the development of language it is the root of words such as anguish & anxiety. What does that tell you about the feeling of those emotions? Frigea or frig to her friends - the goddess of love in Norse & old English pantheons; many of the gods had fingers associated with them. Hers was the middle finger. Go finger, no I mean figure. The little finger was divinatory. You put it into your ear and 'heard' secrets from the gods. Some of us still do. Frig and Fraya are the same BTW. Oh I could do this all night... But go on, tell your favourites... It's show and tell tonight....
