I just recently got into preforming magic and I recall times when I would watch a performance with cards and think "Is that a trick deck or did he just do something awesome?" I wouldn't ask to see the deck because of shyness but I would always have been more impressed as a spectator if I could confirm it was a legit deck or if they could convince me that it was. After all really anything an be done with the right trick deck, but it just feels more impossible when done with a fair deck.
I don't mean to presume, but it seems to me that when you're preforming magic for the spectator and not as much for yourself you should be open to the idea of letting them examine a fair deck of cards if it does not interrupt. When I'm doing magic I do it more for the spectator and less for myself, anything I can do to enhance the spectators awe is something I should at least be willing to consider. For the most part I use a fair deck, I only have a mild prearrangement and a card I've signed already in the deck, so it's not a big deal to let them see the deck after a certain point. When someone asks to see the deck I reply, "Sure, after I'm finished with the tricks you can go through it all you like." At that point the order will have mixed itself up and the pre-signed card will have already been used so I'm clean at that point. |

There ARE times that I'll deliberately "forget" to retrieve an item, but the "Please Examine This" line is, in itself, a challenge. Audience Management! If someone respects you so little as to ask to "see", either you're not entertaining enough or you're performing for the wrong person. IMO

I respectfully disagree. I remember always wanting to see. I didn't want to look because I wanted to figure it out, I wanted to see because I wanted to be sure that it was a legit deck and I just saw something truly magical. When I saw magic on television I tended to just dismiss everything as a camera trick or planted actor before I knew what I know now, it kind of ruined magic a little bit for me. But when I was in attendance I could see everything and was forced to ask if it was as simple as a fixed deck or if it was truly magic.
When I asked to see it was because I wanted to believe in the magic and be overwhelmed, but the reputation of magicians as friendly cheats kept me from it. So when I knew that it wasn't the deck I was able to suspend my disbelief better. |

Also just letting me examine one item would have been enough for me. After the first time I saw that it was a fair deck of cards I would have believed that the magician could do anything they said they could do, wouldn't have challenged them again. I realize that this is different than many other reasons people ask to see, but it's important to remember that there are people out there that think that way too.

They always wanted to see the deck, because I performed the trick cold out of nowhere. So I decided I needed to get around this somehow. So I would first perform some tricks with a regular deck, trying to always include one where the spec handled the cards and had a chance to see they were normal, then after a few tricks I would do the ID. Then switch and move back into a non gaffed trick. I haven't been asked once since to give up the cards for examination |

The coolest thing about doing magic for fun, NOT money is beng able to have fun with the audience for no other reason than pleasure. Assuming we are not "Inflicting" our magic on them.
Have fun. Tell them: "NO!, then you'll see how I do this." then DON'T show them, make it a joke on yourself. If no one sees noone knows. If noone knows NOONE knows. It's not a fight, it's fun. They are not our enemy, we are not a threat to them. Just have fun, Unless you are using magic to make a moral point, in that case I have nothing... Be sarcastic, be absurd. It's like comedy, Honesty is not needed (It's make believe, we should know that by now, we don't really do magic). Make sure they enjoy the thing more than you do. Make sure you really enjoy the thing. Some people will challenge you because some poeple cannot accept that they cannot understand something. Let it go and do not under any circumstance let it affect your next thing. I bet you that nothing you have learned here -and there has been a lot of good info- will affect your next thing, with new people, for pure fun. You cannot ever stop people from mistrusting you, since you, and I, and everyone here who preforms magic are not trustworthy (at least during magic (I hope)). So move on. My opinion, and as such does not reflect the opinion of whoever thinks I am wrong.
Magic is doing improbable things with odd items that, under normal circumstances, would be unnessecary and quite often undesirable.

I guess it's a personal thing for me really. I remember how much I enjoyed a trick when I was allowed to inspect it after to prove to myself that something really impressive just happened, I just struggled to enjoy something that was possible only because of a trick deck. That's the kind of experience I want to recreate for my audience. I want them to believe, without a doubt that I just did the impossible.
All of this goes out the window if they're heckling. If they're heckling you then no I wouldn't let them see the cards, they might intentionally damage them just to get a rise out of you. I did like JD Draws Things' post, that's pretty powerful. Personally I use all of my dirty tricks in the frist 1 or 2 tricks, after the trick the cards look like they should and are returned to the deck perfectly clean. So when I had a heckler run up and grab the deck and throw it on the table for all to see how big of a cheater I was he proved himself stupid and made me look even more impressive, best thing that could have happened at that moment really. But what do I know, I'm new and not making a living or even money off of this. |

I believe he was 26. He's a co-worker of mine. He's a good guy but we just give eachother a lot of flack. He tried to get me that time and just looked dumb. It was hillarious.

Keep a duplicate deck out of the case in a pocket say' I don't know' at the same time put both hands in pockets wait a few as your thinking about it then bring out the reg deck let them look but always instruct them to shuffle and then do one more trick w that deck. However I tend to always do a trick w a standard deck that the spec handles before I switch in the gaff deck that keeps the heat away.
