Yeah, Daff', so was I! I got all three books and PG. It is SO disturbing and SO dark...I have to be careful who I perform for. You can customize the routine to suit you. This is not for everyone, though. If you are careless and not sensitive to a person's feelings and beliefs, you can get into trouble.
I tried out 1936 at a friend's here in Augusta. We had 15 people including myself around a table. I had a 22 yr old girl as my sitter. She got up and left. She was crying. I tried to explain this is all entertainment, but no. She would not buy it. To this day, she is still disturbed by it and will not speak to me. My friend that owns the house, was rather miffed with me that I made his friend leave upset. "Dude, is that sh** for REAL? Man, I've never seen anything like that before. Do me a favor. NEVER do that again! OK? Please? This psychic sh** scares me TOO!" All that over a freakin' MAGIC TRICK! Sheesh. Yeah, I know. It is NOT a magic trick. It is a diabolical creation. When you delve into mental illness and insane asylums, it hits people to the core! And yes, that Insane Asylum really did exist! And the residents? Oh...(chills) you don't want to KNOW! Doug |

I would also recommend 13 Steps over Practical Mental Magic. The DVD version version by Osterlind is great as well. I know they also made a DVD version of Practical Mental Magic but I haven't had the chance to view the, myself.

Banachek's PSI Series DVDs are also outstanding. Those three DVD sets contain a wealth of effects to get you well on your way to performing mentalism. |

Wravyn mentions in an earlier comment that you should look at Bob Cassidy's 39 steps to Mentalism. It's a basic reading list for anyone who wishes to become proficient in the art. Unfortunately, you're going to have to spend some money to get your education. Also, keep in mind that 13 Steps to Mentalism and Anneman's Practical Mental Effects are both on the list in the 39 Steps. There is a basic difference between the two. 13 Steps is basically a "textbook" of mentalism while Practical Mental Effects is a compilation from Anneman's magazine The Jinx. The former was released originally as 13 separate lessons while the latter was published affer Anneman's death. You'll find excellent material in both, although in some cases it will need presentational updating for modern performances. If I had to pick one to start with it would be 13 Steps due to the textbook nature of the work.
