Can this still be done effectively without the throwing of the salt?
I am getting so tired of slitting the throats of people who say that I am a violent psychopath.

No the salt adds to the psychology of the effect, why have the salt shaker there. The thought is the salt is turning into coins. You do not have to throw it over the shoulder, as I don't do that part. Also I don't use as much but more does make it look better

If you don't want to spill salt simply stick some tape under the lid of the shaker. I hear imaginary salt is almost as magical as the real thing. I picked this up a couple of weeks ago and everything you have heard is true. With some work you will draw gasps at every turn.

Hefemexy,
I agree, I use an empty shaker as well and it works well. KJ |

Mmmh, let me state, that I love the theme, and I like his handling on most of the phases, but overall I feel a bit disappointed by the DVD. And since noone has critized anything yet, I wanna explain why.
First, you get one routine, that is fairly short. You produce and vanish 3 coins singely, they reappear in different locations, and then all go at once. What makes it stand out on other routines is the theatricle presentation, and making each phase rely heavily on misdirection. it reminds of the cups and balls. But there are no extras, no alternative handlings, not even alternative sleights. Its a single-Routine-DVD for 50quit. If I compare that with the DVDs of other performers, just take the wonder-tapes as example, I don't see this pricetag being fair, unless your a fulltime pro. There were 2 points in the routine I did not like, and don't want to perform like he does. The way he gets into position for the first coinproduction can done better ("Tamariz crossing the gaze" comes to mind) , and I feel, that the napkinproduction didn't look magical at all, due to lack of attention that was given to the napkin from the beginning. What I miss the most is what makes a great routine separate from a good one...the finish with a big surprise. There was a lot of potential for that, especially when you see what the al goshman-routine. I will take his routine as a basiceffect, and rework it to my needs, which will take a lot of work. Well, all critizism aside, thank you Giovanni for putting out an inspiring DVD, breathing back life into Al Goshmans legacy. |

Hence the shaker, I thought about including David Stones idea, ending up with a white napkin inside the shaker.

IMO the elegance is very nice just as Giovanni structured it. Sure you can tweak a few misdirective moments but for me this is no way a disappointment. I didn't feel extras or alternatives were needed as it seems Giovanni has aimed for sheer elegance as it stands without compromising the purity of the plot.

I think the attraction to this was the demo showing people clapping and screaming.
But, if it inspires you to create your own routine, then that's a good thing. |

However the resourceful professional who gives this piece his heart and soul until perfected, will have an award winning routine at his fingertips. An interlude that will add a touch of class to an already developing act. Something that will be looked back upon by witnesses and remembered as priceless. Don't let the over abundance of magic that is being spilled from the trough of so many magicians, drown your ability to value the art. The length of the routine seems adequate, but if your expectations were high in this regard then your disappointment is understood. It is not a long piece, nor was it intended to be. If $50 is an unreasonable price for a sneak peek into the arsenal of a true professional then why are we wasting our time with this craft? Before our audiences can value magic we must value it ourselves. |

I haven't posted in a long long time, but felt I needed to jump in....
I've now been working with this routine for several months, and personally feel that it would be worth its "salt" for twice the price. I've performed for both layman and magicians, and across the board: - people are fooled again, and again, and again - they appreciate the artistry of the routine (no - you aren't buying a DVD to teach you a bunch of new moves). what you are getting is a routine that BEAUTIFULLY ties together sleight of hand and misdirection in a way that flows beautifully. There is a reason for every movement, there are no suspcious moves, its easy to "follow," and truly appears magical. - even layman appreciate the work that goes into performing the routine -- its obvious that you're not using "trick props," and that the performance is based upon a large investment of time and skill. (ps - no knucklebusting sleights required....so if you're not a coin expert, no worries!) While I agree that the coin placement under napkin is not ideal (I too took a different approach - happy to share via Private Message), disagree about the impact. Almost every time people comment about "how in the world did you get the coin under the napkin?" Could be due to the how I set up the routine.... (again, PM me....) To sum up, best purchase I've made in years...and in putting serious time into learning it, believe its made me a much much better magician overall. To the comment about the audience reaction....from my experience, the demo understates it. I've NEVER had so many oooo's and aaaaah's during a routine. BRAVO! |

I have just recently purchased this routine so I can not give you input regarding how layman will react. I can definitely say it is one of the best purchases I have made in a long, long time. It is a well thought out routine which certainly provides a great opportunity to learn about structure, body position, misdirection and much more. I do want to be clear that he does not discuss all of these topics but if you study and learn the routine all of these topics will be a bi-product of your experience. I very highly recommend it to anyone. Magicians of all skill levels will learn from this very well constructed and magical routine.

Penguin has Salt and Silver
http://www.penguinmagic.com/p/3196 I worked on it for about a month to get it smooth, even though the sleights are minimal. You would be hard pressed to find another coin routine that entertains an audience like Gio's Salt and Silver! NO sleeving. Just a couple of VERY basic coin sleights, combined with incredible routining, make this a winner for hobbyists or Pro's. Gio teaches each phase and then performs that particular phase, making it very easy to learn the routine. You also get a solo performance, a performance for two people and then Gio perfoming Salt and Silver at the Magic Castle! Salt and Silver would be a restaurant workers dream. Zombie |

IM sorry, WHY HAS THIS NOT BEEN TALKED ABOUT MORE!!! This effect is amazing, who didn't watch this trailer or dvd for the first time and get fooled with every next phase.... His ques and lessons on misdirection are phenominal... Does anyone know if he has a chop cup routine? Would love to pick his brain on it.

Side question: Does anyone know the name of the composer or the name of the piano music played during the Livera routine. It's a piece I'd like to learn.
