Is it possible to enjoy performing to a group of people, all of which you know, but some you don't like?

I'm trying to visualise that situation.
And I think that the bottom line is that if they enjoy my performance then I'll enjoy performing. And if not, not. Dave

It had better be!
Because, as a performer, you don't get to pick and choose your audiences. And, if you can't play to all types, then maybe you shouldn't be playing to any! cheers, Peter Marucci showtimecol@aol.com |

What if you have the option to perform at an event and you were with the said group of people? Would you still do it then?

Honestly, I have never been in that situation, but I will speculate if I may.
I would still do it. Is it me who doesn't like them? Or is a mutual feeling (they dont like me)? If they dont like me either, than I think it would be a great excercise in audience management. Years ago I wouldn't have done it, today I will take any practice I can get

I worked at a major bank for many years and while there I was performing on a fairly regular basis. Many of my shows were for bank functions where I knew some or all of the people, some of whom I couldn't stand. However, until you mentioned it, it was something I had never thought about. The 'show" was the thing and that's where my energies went.( The money was also very good) As Peter said, you can't chose your audiences if you expect to work on a regular basis. I say "do it" and move on.Also, if you're good and the majority of the people like the show it will ***** off the people who don't like you. Look at the bright side.

I think its entirely possible. I have had my share of schoolyard enemies. All of whom love it when I show them illusions. So I guess you could say. They just seem to forget that they dont like me and enjoy something that is taken to the heart. Mmm... pepsi is good. I need some now!... But wait.. COKE IS BETTER! HEHEHEHEHEHEHEEHEHEHHE!

Well, I'm not the most charitable person, and if there was someone I didn't like in a group I'd perform the most humiliating effect I could on them.
Being part of a crowd, the guy would have to comply with me, and I'd make him suffer! (Who says being bullied at school doesn't leave a lasting effect?)! |

The option of performing? If there is the option of getting paid, I'll do it.
Performing has nothing to do with liking or disliking people, however if you are being pressed to perform by people you don't like in an informal situation with no pay, why bother. You are not a puppet for people to pull strings. One does meet one or two obnoxious people over the years performing, but I would certainly not do a phonic69 and humiliate them. To be honest I try not to dislike people (maybe difficult sometime, but I try). As someone working with people you have to be a people lover and have more tolerance of others. The only time you can be performing for the wrong audience is if you are doing a kids act for adults or vise-versa. Paul Hallas |

Tom Ogden's Magic For Dummies has a list of questions you must ask of potential bookers.
I also put a warning on my flyers / brocheres etc "For intelligent, adult audiences only!" |

You may say I am a nitpicker but I think Tom Ogden`s book is The Complete Idiot's Guide to Magic Tricks, not Magic For Dummies. The author of Magic For Dummies is David Pong.

I agree - problems only arise when you do perform adult material to kids. Or if you do potentially offensive material to a particular group (eg religious jokes in front of a religious group)...

I agree with Phonic69 (he really seems to have come up with sum great posts on this magic site). If they hate you and you hate them back then what better way to get at them! Nothing better than watching someone squirm as you humiliate them. After all it would still be some kind of magical effect, and very funny to the other group of people just not to him!
That which goes around comes around! Just my view, Andy |

Humiliating others in front of an audience only makes the aggressor appear a very small person.
Furthermore, that other person has more oportunity to spoil your plan than you have to carry it out. It is a bad idea philosophically and logistically. |

Apparently there are at least a couple of magic tricksters on this thread who have never performed professionally before. A gentleman never humiliates anyone in his audience, and it behooves the professional entertainer to act like one. Performing magic can have its rewards both aesthetically (recognition, ego boost, artistic fulfillment) and financially; however, the astute performer realizes that his performance is all about them (the audience), not all about me (the magician).
A well-routined performance leaves little room for potential hecklers or troublemakers in the audience to begin with...and should they become a problem, bring the show to a premature closing and leave. You are there to enterain people, not antagonize them. The attitude of the "angry" tricksters who posted previously is what brings the artistry of magic to the low level it sometimes has descended. We should always try to raise our craft to higher levels.

Come on guys! A magician's job isn't to humiliate. It's to entertain and try to amaze your audience. A doctor doesn't let his patients die because he doesn't like them does he? If it was me, I would do my job and entertain, and the rest is bull....

I have heard of this kind of thing before, I remember years back being told by a kids entertainer he had booked to perform late at night for adults dressed as children at a fancy dress party! Hen party? I think that's one kids show I'd accept, lol. |
