It is my sad duty to report the death of Gene Grant on January 18, 2013.
Gene, who was known to magicians everywhere as Phantini, was my good friend for nearly 35 years. He was a native of Belfast, ME, but had lived in Jackson, MS, for over 60 years. Gene was known as "Mr. Magic" while appearing for many years on local television. But he gained a worldwide reputation among mentalists for a number of books and effects that he marketed under the pseudonym of "Phantini." Gene truly loved magic and never tired of showing other magicians the techniques and skills that he acquired over the 70 plus years that he performed. It says a great deal about Gene's attention to detail that he maintained a record of every show he ever performed, listing every trick, the fee earned, the venue, and other details of his performance. As he often did school shows, he wanted to always show the audience something new. Those of us who knew him best honored Gene by long ago naming Ring 98 of the International Brotherhood of Magicians the Gene Grant Ring. Gene's beloved wife and magical assistant, Ruth, predeceased him. He is survived by a brother who resides in Maine, and a host of friends. He was a soft-spoken, refined gentleman who will be greatly missed. Funeral arrangements are pending. Edward Hutchison Madison, MS |

I'm so sorry to hear about the passing of my friend, Gene Grant. I was having a discussion with another magician about Phantini just last week. He was a wealth of knowledge and had amazing stories to tell. He will most definitely be missed. Rest in peace, old friend.

I just learned about this on Saturday. I have never known anyone else who posessed such a simple, true "love" for magic. This will be a huge loss to Ring 98 and to the entire magic community.
Whenever we had a Ring show, the only thing set in stone is that Mr. Grant was the opening act.
Things are more like they are today than they've ever been before...

We never met. I knew of him from his writings in "Linking Ring" in years past. He always had something worthwhile to say.

Sad to hear. I bought all his Phantini booklets and used many of his creations. He also sold me a great floating rope trick (poor man's Indian Rope trick) called Wonder Rope. I used that thing for two decades!
Great thinker, super magician, and nice guy.
The artist formally known as Mumblepeas!

Gene was also a member of the Psychic Entertainers Association for many years and was the recipient of our Creativity Award in 2001. I remember his as a fine gentlemen and a clever creator of professional mentalism
May he RIP. Good thoughts, Bob Cassidy |
