Fellow manipulators,
I live in TEXAS and took part in an OUTSIDE performance last weekend and my hands were FREEZING cold!!! This, by the way, can do wonders for your act, if you have not yet tried it!!! I do card and ball manip..... The obvious would be to wear gloves or to somehow keep one's hands warm, prior to performance...Has anyone else experienced this??? Can anyone share any techniques to keep one's hands warm prior to a manipulative performance other than the most obvious??? Or anyother techniqure to combat this problem? |

I must laugh only to say welcome to the world of manipulators who have realized working in the cold is never easy at all. I learned a long time ago that your hands can not be cold if you expect to be able to do your card and billatd ball manipulations. It is something I now teach people about in my lectures etc. In case you have not experienced this, your muscles tense up and it feel like your doing everything in super slow motion. It is an awkward feeling for sure. What I do is always keep my hands warm if I know I am in a situation wear I may have to perform in a cold location. The idea hear is to wear gloves during your set up and the minute you leave the house. Keep those gloves on and keep the hands warm. Do not take them off until right before performance and then work the hands and exercise them before you go on. I have also used think cloth black gloves for my billard ball acts in the past and they have worked well. These gloves I can keep on the entire time and they do not hinder my performance. Hope this helps.

Kyle' right. It's important to keep the hands warm over a long period. It's not a good idea to let them get cold and then try to warm them up at the last minute as the muscles would have tightened. Gloves should be fine, unless working in the Arctic. Then something else might be required.
Also try to keep the hands moving. Using your thumb to touch the tip of each finger over and over helps to keep the muscles active and stop them from tightening. |

I always run through a series of manipulative moves before every performance. Like any other parts of the bosy, you also need to exercise your hands to get them warmed up and ready for your act. Trust me when I say it does make a big difference.

Gloves are the way to go. In a pinch, you can run your hands under really hot water. The hotter you can stand the better. That will warm your hands and loosen up those tight muscles.I have had the same discusion with freinds that are gutair players, they find it works well also.
Have you ever done sleight of hand for 4 hours in snow and 20 degree or colder ? Welcome to chrismas lights at the Cleveland metro parks zoo. They sell Hot packs for sports players and football fans, once activated they stay hot for an hour or two. Hope these ideas help in some way Fran D'Amico |

Placing heat packs into pockets of your jacket when doing strolling magic outdoors is also a very good method for keeping the hands warm.

If you had cards anywhere near the heat packs they would warp, just be careful!

You are right. I was referring to having the heat packs in your pockets to keep your hands warm prior to your actual performance. If you are forced to be outside or in a cold location before your performance, this would allow you to keep your hands warm before you get ready to go on stage. If your doing strolling magic, you can keep the heat packs in your jacket and wear a magic type apron to keep your magic supplies in and away from the heat.
