I was just reviewing an old IBM score sheet of mine and noticed that you receive points for messing up and recovering. So in theory, the person who does a flawless act has the chance of losing to someone just as good who messed up a couple times.
Does this seem weird to anyone else? I don't think that you should be awarded points for messing up. I'd be interested in understanding this a little more, can anyone offer some feedback? Dave

Hi Dave,
While I wasn't aware of this fact here's my thoughts as to why they might have it. Just my opinion of course and not based on what the theory behind it is. I often compare magic to professional ice-skating for some reason. Probably has to do with the fact that they are scored on presentation as well as technical skill. Even the world's best occasionally fall but how fast they recover and continue with the rest of the performance is apparent for all to see. I think a magic performance is somewhat like that although hopefully laypeople didn't catch a mistake actually happened. Like the skaters that fall and become so un-nerved the rest of their show is stilted and they appear guarded there are others who persevere. A sign of a true sportsman. I think the more experience one has the more able they are to deal with the pressure of competition and the occasional error. The spectators and judges (are human or least the majority are ) have all probably have had at least one mishap on stage and can relate. I have so much respect for those that carry on and continue with their act, regardless. A bit of strength of character and a true pro perhaps? I know it's not exactly what you were looking for , just wanted to post my thoughts. Good "seeing" you again Dave! |
