Just wondering if the balloon to dove causes any discomfort to the dove being that it is so loud and alarming, at least the one I have.

I use the balloons from "Needle Thru Balloons." They are not as strong as regular balloons.

I never asked my dove if the noise bothered him. LOL. Seriously, Justin, I'm assuming you are using the dove to balloon tray in which case the trauma to the bird is no worse that pulling him from a pocket. Actually there is LESS stress to the bird. I personally don't believe the noise is anything to worry about. Once they get used to it through practice, it will be just like any other noise to them.

Justin,
The noise to the dove in the dove in balloon tray is really only the sound of the trap in my act. While there is a noise, it is certainly much less than the applause. My Dove in Balloon (I use three custom ones I have from Chalet --- Thanks George!) do not require an assistant to hold the tray and trip the door. The "tray" in mine is really a table top. Therefore, I usually go about 75 feet away from the prop and out into the audience and let the volunteer shoot a blank pistol at the balloon. Also the balloon is covered with a plexiglas box to add to the trick as well as confine my dove to the box. (In some states, a live bird in a food prep or food service area is a health violation. This also allows me to do this trick outdoors, even where there are cats.) The sound of the blank gun is a good distance away. As far as the distance the bird travels, compare it to the distance a bird is moved in any regular body steal. The distance is less than half a foot and the dove is "thrown" very safely from the bottom of the bag. Nothing is attached to the bird. I personally believe that it is a very safe and humane dove production. And I also believe that almost all bird productions are safer than the vanishes. As for injuries, I have been doing that specific trick about thirty years and haven't injured a dove yet. In fact, I have never ever injured a dove in a show or going to or from a show. All of my injuries to livestock have happened at home during feeding time. (I have over four decades of performing magic so far and I keep about a hundred doves for my magic shows.) I like the concepts of your question. It says some very good things about you. For many years I have written Dove Hotline on the net for professional dove magicians and it includes a Q&A section. No one in all those years had asked me about noise related to the comfort of the birds. Generally, I don't think doves are very sensitive to noise. In the wilds they will feed in working rail yards where railroad workers wear hearing protection due to the high levels of noise. The doves are just hunting the free spilled grain. The free meal must be worth it. After all, they pay the same everywhere for meals. They could avoid the noise if they wished. They don't. I included the link for other dove questions and answers which might interest you. http://www.magicauction.com/DoveHotline/DoveHotline.html Enjoy! Thanks for being concerned about the animals too! The audience needs to know we care. Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |
