Control card to top (or bottom); cut it to center and keep a break.
control to top (or second or third, etc) and faro to a definite, known position. ('method 1' sounds like a bottom deal, and not a very efficient way to control a card to the center.) |

Harry Lorayne also has an instant crimp that you can do infront of the spectators without notice so you can locate the card wherever it is in the deck. I can't remember which volume of his classic collection it's in. If it comes to me I'll let you know.
