Control card to top (or bottom); cut it to center and keep a break.
control to top (or second or third, etc) and faro to a definite, known position.
('method 1' sounds like a bottom deal, and not a very efficient way to control a card to the center.)

Harry Lorayne also has an instant crimp that you can do infront of the spectators without notice so you can locate the card wherever it is in the deck. I can't remember which volume of his classic collection it's in. If it comes to me I'll let you know.
