It's fantastic for stage mentalism. Great routines, very entertaining presentations.

I agree with Mindpro... I love John's stuff too as well as his comedic style but it's more magic with a mental twist. Great stuff if you can get a copy of it and "Further" has a lot of great stuff on it as well.

I have to, respectfully, disagree with Reader and Mindpro. The effects and routines taught on Educating Archer (and Further Education) are solid, powerful mentalism. John might deliver them in a more lighthearted/comedic fashion, but they're all linked back to classics in mentalism.

Just realized I didn't actually review it:
Tossed Out Deck - John adds a nice bit of thinking to a classic effect. It doesn't break new ground, but it's a nice way to deal with a drawback that some might have to this routine. Tragic Square - John doesn't offer much in the way of advancing the plot, but his solution for the method is very practical. Ring Vanish - Definitely a magic effect, not mentalism. Not my favorite (and I'd actually forgotten it was on there), but still solid thinking. Komedy Killer - John's handling of Kenton's effect. I prefer his thinking in Further Education, as with this method you would need to make an additional purchase (which, I believe is very hard to find). KK has never been my favorite effect, but his presentation is funny. Spoon River - A spoon bending routine. I don't do metal bending, and this wasn't my all-time favorite. John has an issue in the performance, so that suffered a little bit on the DVD. I've seen better spoon routines out there. Stapled - A funny, but magical torn and restored card. This is a funny effect, but again - not mentalism. A card is torn into quarters, and is then restored right in front of the audience - as the performer takes out a stapler and staples the pieces together. After a bit of a laugh, there's a great little kicker that blows them away. Chinese Choice - An interesting take on an add a number effect. 2 spectators, from a small packet of cards, creates a series of numbers which add up to a total amount of money they have to spend on food at a chinese restaurant. The third person totals their numbers and uses that number to choose the meal on a chinese menu. That meal, an all-you-can eat buffet for 3 matches the amount of money just totaled. A cute take - but not something I would personally do. The numbers lends itself to the chinese menu well, but it seemed a bit too procedural for my liking. Spelling Test - You predict, in advance, a word a person freely thinks of. Funny routine - some solid thinking here. DoDeckADeal - A demonstration of choice and chance with cards. Half the deck is given to the spectator, you keep the other half. Spectator freely shuffles their deck, and deals them into a pile, stopping whenever they like. The magician then goes through his half, face up, asking the spectator to stop at anytime. They do, and your card is placed on top of theirs. This is repeated 2 more times. The performer then shows that each time, the card stopped at by chance matches the card selected by choice. This is a clever effect, but requires some extra bits and bobs to create the deck. It's a good effect, though. Collard - John's take on the Koran Medallion effect using a stuffed dog toy. Mostly, you're paying for John's presentational ideas on these effects. He adds some ideas and thoughts to the methods, but nothing too groundbreaking. If you're not familiar with these effects, it's a good place to start. If you are - then it's a good opportunity to see how John approaches them from a performance standpoint. All in all, it's a worthy purchase. |

I love Johns work and his DVDs are certainly worth a look. I believed they are also sold as downloads as well. His blindfold video is also very informative.
