If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

A friend of mine worked the Dunes for many years and always spoke well of Wyman.

He would be a great charecter to put into a film like Martin Scorcese's film, Casino. I loved Sydney Greenstreets laugh. There was a big fat fellow who used to play at my place who had great laugh, who made the game so much more enjoyable. May he rest in peace, I miss him. I like charecters, even the nasty ones, as they make it all interesting lets say. But at the same time I like a nice quite game.

Thanks for the post, tommy. Brings back fond memories. Some of these guys were bigger than life and almost came out of a Damon Runyon novel.
The Dunes had a big poker game off from the casino in the late sixties - early seventies. Brunson played there as well as some of the other old time big name heavyweights. Sid Wyman played there also until he was told he could not play in his own joint. I won’t say much about the game except there were some extremely sharp (and I mean super-sharp) people who played there from time to time. The Hold’em game of today was different than Hold’em as played in Vegas at that time as far as the buy-in was concerned. Back then, a big no-limit game would spring up from time to time and they had an unlimited cash buy-in. Because of that, the good players busted out all the regular players who thought they were good very quickly and that kept killing the game. They then had to wait until a new crop of money players expressed a desire to play. Finally, they came up with the idea of limiting the buy-in and after that Hold’em really took off because the regular players lost their money a lot more slowly to the pros and really didn’t get clobbered so quickly. Some of the stories I could tell of those days are almost out of a James Bond novel – but – that was another era. |

The Kandy-Kolored Tangerine-Flake Streamline Baby - Tom Wolfe, is fun read about the 60s. Big Sid Wyman etc is mentioned in one of the chapters, or essays as it is a collected book of essays from Esquire mag from 60s.
