There is a new print of the book "Second to none" by Simon Lovell.
This is a book about dealing seconds that cover more than 15 different techniques. I was already a fan of the first edition book, that was more of a note binding. The techniques are explained step by step and it is with this book that I perfected by second deal as there is a sections on the mistakes you must not do and some tuning once you have it down. It covers the strikes and pushovers ( dealing stud, one-hand etc, also. To me, this booklet was a complete course on second dealing. He also covers scaling, how to practise and a little on punch second dealing. and the last sections have a few magic tricks that uses the second deal. I even had to chance to session with Simon and he gave me some tips to improve my seconds. In this new edition, you will find all of the prior notes but in a nice book format. The drawings have been replaced with photos and there is still a lot of illustrations that explains step by step the deals. But the main reason to get the 2nd edition for someone who already have the notes is the added sections. My favorite one is the historical section where he tries to locate the second deal through time and it's first appearance in print. He shows early photos and prints of early seconds. There is also a section of the second deal used in gambling application that is an overview of the subject but a good read. Lastly, an added section on final tips and tuning. You can find the book here: http://www.gamblingincorporated.com/prod......0&page=1 Personally, I got my hands on it while visiting Tannen's in New York to get me a supply of Bee cards and others. Cheaper than in Canada. Be sure to ask for a discount for large quantity buys. The book had just been released in february. Here are some random stuff I enjoyed in the book: 1. Don't try to make a second deal that looks like your tops. Go the other way around! Do a good second and then work on your top so it looks like your second. 2. It goes for the sound that might be heard by a second too. 3. In a pushoff second, try pulling back the top card with the other thumb...*** 4. "Filer la carte" in french was a top change for magicians but a second for cheats. I think the book is a must to have on your bookshelf. Slim |

Slim23, That is an excellent review and I appreciate the time and effort you put in to post it.
I never read the original Lovel book but briefly browsed through it some time back and it had the only writen description of a second deal that was used by one hustler while busting out on the BJ game in Vegas. I used to watch him when I was very young. A very dapper and trim guy about 35 years old and fearless. He did a lot more than a second deal, but I was surprised that Lovel had it in his book. Thanks again for taking the time for this. |

Cag, I appreciate the comments!
I am very happy that Simon described a move you saw. It's very satisfing to find out or have confirmed you're reading something that was really used by cardsharps, at least to me. It's a little piece of history... Slim p.s. I am trying to post something that some will find interesting in 2013... |
