So MAGIC MAGAZINE has published a my mem-deck trick "The Third Card" (March issue). It's actually a follow-up to a sandwich trick. My main reason for getting it in print is because I know others can use the move to create variations and improvements. The write-up omitted certain subtleties, so here's a performance video with a theatrical conceit heavily influenced by Simon Aronson's great trick "The Invisible Card": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ix4cvgq8oTk

Nice idea! I'm a little concerned about going back to the box too many times, there's a casualness in the handling that's lacking that needs to be routined in. But this could be very powerful indeed.

Thanks for your comments. Valid concerns BUT: The problem with performing for the camera is that it's missing context. Here, yes, I "go to the box" twice in two minutes. In actual performance, you the jokers go into the box the box, which is set aside, and I do something else. There's no heat on the box, but this youtube clip fails miserably at time-misdirection. Anyway, when I eventually go to grab it again, it's under the cover of a classic in-transit action: I need to spread the cards, but the box is in the way. Another problem with the video is that I wanted the box in frame, but it was positioned a little too close so it looks like I'm trying to snap it up, which I am. Trust me though, people are far more focused on the deck: you're saying the card's in there, and they're saying they didn't see it. People don't want to be thought of as liars or dumb.
"Hmmmm... it really isn't here." "See, we told you." Video viewers also have the benefit of knowing the selection would end up in the box, otherwise, why would I introduce it? This is actually one of the problems I had with the write-up, which suggests performing this after "several" sandwich tricks under increasingly impossible conditions, whereupon, finally, the conjuror "offers to isolate the jokers." That, in may opinion, puts too much heat on the box.

The Invisible Card is discussed on page 100 of Try the Impossible. But, I think it's in one of the other books, too, because there's a line which I think Simon wrote which is not in TTI. After he puts the alleged Invisible card down on the table he asks the audience to look at it and comments: "If you don't see it, you're looking in the right place."
I could be wrong and this is somebody else's line. Not sure. Dennis Loomis

Thanks for that info, Dennis.
I remember seeing Simon perform "The Invisible Card" on volume 3 of his "Sessions with Simon" DVD set. But I couldn't recall reading about "The Invisible Card" in any of his books. As for the line you seem to recall (i.e., "If you don't see it, you're looking in the right place."), I don't recall that line at all. However, on the aforementioned DVD, as Simon mimes holding up an invisible card, he does an audience exchange similar to "You can't tell what this card is; do you know why?. Audience, of course, says "Because it is invisible"...to which Simon impishly replies "No! It's because the card is face down!" A great harmless fun exchange that really sucks the audience in further. Thanks for that TTI info. Mike

It's definitely in one of his books (TRY THE IMPOSSIBLE sounds right). A truly fun trick to perform.

It's been a year since I published my trick, and yesterday I finally bothered to record a live performance: http://youtu.be/rRqyp7leAfA

Very nice. Everything is motivated and it has a good construction. I love the motivation for the cut to bury the invisible card in the deck. Well done.

Thanks guys.
Steve: One of the major selling points for using the premise of an invisible card was to motivate cutting the deck, but for some reason the MAGIC write-up completely left that bit of business out, and advised readers to "use their favorite method."
