In volume 3 of Card College, pages 535-37, Giobbi goes over how to do a table spread and a two-handed fan with a step. Both require fanning/spreading the cards from left to right, and both are SUPPOSED to result in a slightly more exposed outer, left corner of the top card of the lower half (the half below the step).
The problem is that he says to do the step as taught in Vol. 1, page 33, which says to hold pinky break and then "Bend in the outer phalanges of the left middle, ring and little fingers, forcing the inner right corner of the upper packete to the left, where it falls on the lower packet." That technique results in an exposed corner at the inner right, but to do the spread/fan I think the step needs to be at the outer left corner. Indeed the top picture on page 535 shows just that. (But then the picture on 536 shows the step at the inner left, where it should be if one uses the method in Vol. 1). So what am I missing? How am I supposed to get the corner exposed by the step from the inner right to the outer left in order to fan or spread? A 180 degree turn of the deck would accomplish this, but I highly doubt that Giobbie would leave that out. It seems like the best method would be to collapse the break by straightening the left little fingers to the right while pressing upwards against the underside of the deck, thus shifting the bottome half to the left against the base of the left thumb and the top half to the right (see "By Forces Unseen, page 30). But even this isn't quite right as the exposed corner results at the INNER left corner instead of the OUTER left. And again, Giobbi didn't cover this method. So, what am I missing? |

Why do you need this for? I mean, are you going to force a card or anything else, I checked out my copy of card collegue and I think there's a mistake in the pictures. I'll send you an alternative method via PM

Also, harry lorayne has a great move called angle ribbon spread which I think is better than using the step for the ribbon spread. you might want to check that out.
