I am looking for information about magician John 'Jack' Mendes, that worked as PRINCE MENDES, who was in the Broadway, traveling, and movie, THIS IS THE ARMY SHOW. I recently found a newspaper interview that he gave when he visited Madeira Island. He was originally from Massachusetts, and died in New York in the mid 50s. Photos will also be helpful - will compensate. If you have info on this magician, and want to share it, I will appreciate it. Not much is known about him. Don`t think that I can post contact info, but if you have info I can use, declare it in a reply to this post, and I will seek you out- hopefully.

I believe there was at least one photo of Prince Mendes in the Dover publication of _Magic Tricks and Card Tricks_ by Wilfrid Jonson. But check the editions of the book that you might find carefully, because some of the editions did not have the gallery of magicians.
There was a routine called "Shooting Card" by John Prince Mendes published in Tarbell Volume 4. The description at Denis behr's "Conjuring Archive Searchable Magic Book Contents" describes the trick thusly: "card shoots out of deck..." There are three routines in Rice's Silk Encyclopedia, Volume 3 by Prince Mendes. He is listed at the Portuguese American Historical Foundation webpage: http://portuguesefoundation.org/famous.html and also at http://www.encyclopedia.com/topic/Portuguese_Americans.aspx ----- Amado "Sonny" Narvaez

In reading "Cardini, the Suave Deceiver", there are some paragraphs on Mendes, pg. 371, discussing his performance at an IBM show (there's a picture of an advertising photo, same page, for Mendes).
I'm trying to get the film "This is the Army" to see if his act is shown there. If you do a Google search for "prince mendes magician", some interesting Billboard entries show up in "Google Books". Larry S. PS: Here's a YouTube video of "This is the Army", Mendes appears around 1:02:20 http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=pla......#t=3743s |

Thanks guys for the input. Didn't know that Prince Mendes' pic. was in Johnson's book. Did know about his contributions to Rice's Ency. of Silk Magic and in Tarbell's #4. Did not know about being mentioned in "Cardini, the Suave Deceiver" Did know about the magic oriented news clips that he sent to Billboard while he was primarily in the in the Orient with This Is The Army Show. He was in the movie. Billboard also covered his marriage in 1946. After the TITA Shows he became a night club magician and corporate entertainer. He appeared in the combined IBM/SAM Convention in NY in 1951, The most revealing piece on him, I found in a Portuguese newspaper from the Madeira Island, where Mendes gave an extensive interview when he went to the island to settle his father's estate, He was of Portuguese heritage, born in Massachusetts. Linking Ring covered his obituary in 1955. He is listed in the Portuguese American Historical Foundation webpage because I put him there. In my search I have found a set of :"age cards" that he used as a give away promo piece. I welcome all info on the man. No article on him has appeared in magic nagazibes as far as I can tell. ????????? Wou;d like to do an article on him if I get enough material.
As side line info: Larry Weeks, the famous juggler was also in the TITA Show. |

Prince Mendes is seen at about 1:02:20 of this youtube clip from "This Is the Army":
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oqbYx968y34 He has a non-speaking role and is called Corporal Mendes in the clip. He does: 1) a comical bang gun effect 2) the harlequin cigarette holder 3) newspaper to cap 4) an appearing necktie effect 5) appearing jacket buttons 6) a feather flower production, and 7) a flag blendo effect ... all in about two minutes of film time. ----- Amado "Sonny" Narvaez
