Hope I am not being Hawaist for lumping them together. 2 great magicians who seem to share many ideas about coin magic. Curtis it seems always Morgans and Kainoa always Barbers. Why is this, just personal preference, different size hands, different styles of magic, different ways of looking at the effect of coins size on the perception of the magic? This inquiring mind wants to know.

I believe it's their hand sizes. I recall Kainoa being mocked jokingly by Curtis in Coinvention in Las Vegas for doing 3 Fly with half sized coins haha.
Respect to both. Kened |

When I started learning coin magic, I used half dollars. They worked well enough for casual performance, I could afford the gaffs, and people could hold them in their hands if I asked them to. But as I began performing professionally, people would ask me to "do that trick you did with the quarters" for their friends. At first, I thought they were just not observant. But I realized that that was the picture they had in their heads. The halves must have looked like quarters in my hands. And how impressive is it to produce a coin, if you could easily hide five in your hands? So I switched to Dollar sized coins, and people seem to be more impressed when I produce a coin.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it. As far as I know, Kainoa never had this problem. I think his favorite coins these days are the Victorian Half Crowns. They're a little bit bigger than the halves, and help the coin magic play in parlor/stage settings.

Straight from Curtis' mouth. Much appreciated. I am not as skilled as either of you but except for a few angles I am just as good with dollars as halfs and I figure all things being equal, bigger is better. I just Kainoa' penguin lecture and it was quite good. I had never seen him perform

For the record I am a pretty small dude and I have small hands, but I have within the past 9 months or so really grown to prefer dollar sized coins over the halves that I had used since I began. It does make for some reworking of sleights here and there, but as Curtis said, people seem to be more impressed with the larger coins.
I love how soft Morgan dollars feel in my hands. They are more satisfying for me personally, so I use them. |

I have small hands too. From all the regular coin (I don't speak about the special made coins from Todd Lassen for example), I prefer the old English pennies. I find that the edge of these coins are very sharp which make them very comfortable in the hand, specially in CP.
I tried Eisenhower dollars and I found them much more difficult to use. The edge is softer and paradoxically, the bigger size doesn't help me for CP. Moreover, as they are bigger, it's more difficult to conceal them. |
