Hi,
I have a problem with the Jeopardy routine by Paul Green. When I ask the spectator to shuffle the deck (with cards mixed face up and down) they almost always drop some cards while shuffling. This is the serious problem as I have to then make sure that the cards are put back in the same orientation as they were before. This causes suspicion. And even bigger problem is that sometimes I don't know if the cards that fell were originally face up or face down. My question is how to tell people to shuffle 'very carefully' without causing a suspicion. And if some cards fall down, how to restart(?) the trick. Thanks for help. |

Love this effect and its variations.
One way of handling this problem is to separate the 2 halves, give them one and instruct them to shuffle their half so you can gauge how comfortable they are with shuffling. If you have any qualms after this point, then the remainder of the procedure is just to have them turn over a portion and exchange it with you, rinse and repeat until thoroughly mixed (so the spec and you are just exchanging and turning over instead of shuffling) -- still results in what seems like a totally mixed up mess and lets you finish without worrying about cards being turned over when they shouldn't be. Check out Colombini's PreDeckability for options on mixing.

I will just add that you should PM Paul. He's a busy guy but he is VERY gracious so be patient if you don't get an answer straight away. Paul has been a HUGE inspiration to my magic and he is really a stand up guy who KNOWS the trenches as it were more than most magicians I have ever met. Tell him Vlad sent you. Namaste |

Have them spread both halves and push them together ala Tamariz.

When I perform Jeopardy, I say that the amazing thing about this trick is that the spectators get to shuffle the deck as much as they like. I ask if anyone is a particularly good shuffler. This question usually gets a frank response -- and I can proceed accordingly. Either I ask the "good shuffler" to mix the cards, or if no one is a good shuffler I just have them separate the two halves and mix them together as Frank Yuen suggests.

Yes. Like Shakuni I watched the video and thought it was great. It is clearly a version of the prediction trick that Paul Green has popularized in the presentation called "Jeopardy." But I too am wondering how the magician in the video dared to let the spectator drop the cards. In the method I know, this would be extremely risky.

Very interesting indeed. After watching closely the coziness of some of the handling, I'm almost positive Derek is being quite the cheeky fellow, if you get my drift...

I always prefer to have the spectator cut off the cards but shuffle them myself.........my reasoning being is that if the spectator does everything then it falls into the to perfect category for me which screams self working, where as I want them to think I'm using sleight of hand when doing self working magic as strange as that may seem.
