This is an effect I've been working on for about a year and a half now...I wanted to have a moving hole effect that looked as magical as those that used gimmicks...but uses no gimmicks. I'd love to get some feedback so I can get an unbiased opinion on how good or not-so-good it looks

It was good. Not bad for an impromptu bit. But why not use a gimmicked version?
I don't find myself with a hole punch just laying around or in my pocket naturally on a daily basis. So if I am going to carry one around to do the moving hole bit, I would probably opt for one of those versions. Or I would do Mike Close's original routine. This would be a good effect to put in a book or submit it to Genii or Magic mag. |

Thanks for the feedback so far...
Chad, I've thought about the very same thing..."Why make an impromptu effect centralized around objects that I have to plan to bring with me?" that's a fair point... Then I realized that its not the fact that it will make the trick more practical with regards to pocket space or preparation, but rather just due to the fact that I don't really like using gimmicks all that much...so if I could have any trick that looks magical without having to worry about malfunctioning gimmicks, I'd opt for that one. Sound a little irrational and paranoid? mayhaps, but I suppose it all just comes down to personal preference |

I agree, no gimmicks if not needed, fair point. Chad's thought that you will need a hole punch anyway so adding a gimmick not really a bad thing. As far as impromptu , still need the hole punch though. I like this, good thinking, made me work out a non gimmick version as well.

Instead of carrying around a hole puncher why not come up with away to make a hole appear on the card using the same method as you make it vanish? You can ask the spectator "Hey you wouldn't happen to have a hole puncher on you by chance, would ya?" as a little joke and when they say the obvious "No" you can say something like "Well of course you don't, that'd be little weird.....oh well that's alright we'll just use mine" (har har) and reach into your inside pocket or pants pocket etc.....and you produce "invisible" hole puncher and you pretend to punch the hole into the corner of the card using your index finger and thumb and you could add a little sound effect with your mouth if you wish.
They'd be laughing and or looking at you like you're a little off, sure. But imagine the look on their face when you move your "invisible hole puncher" and there is an actual hole! And then go into the rest of your routine. Just a thought, but I dig the effect. |
