Knowing the brutal honesty of my fellow magi, I am asking for a critique of my work.
Let me preface by saying that I have not performed the Zombie in 30 years. I understand the concept of trying to let the ball lead me, instead of the other way around...and I am working on that. I have just recently purchased the Tim Wright Video, the WGM video and Al Schneider's book, and will begin to work on those concepts as well. Okay...I have my flak jacket on...fire away! https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=pl......O4Y2Cza8

Thanks Vinny. That is an issue I am working on. My pantomime skills are rusty at best!

Great routine.. and nice music too.. I think you're getting there.. but my suggestion is to take a clowning class.. or miming.
This will teach you to move parts of your body separately to make the phone thing look a lot more natural, and the napkin move seemingly separately from your hands and body. |

Ohhhh no... well you asked and I am going to be brutally honest... Which is what you need.
1. Look in the mirror and tell me what you see. Do you see a suave, sexy, swashbuckling pirate? NO! You see a middle aged man, with glasses and thinning hair. You look like Anthony Edwards. So my first suggestion is to ditch that entire outfit. Donate it to Goodwill and never think about it again. 2. Now that we know you are not a pirate, lets figure out who you are. Look around your house. What do you see? What things interest you? What do you read about? Those are the things that help you to figure out who you are. Whatever it is, channel it into an onstage character. As much as we all think we are different, we really all fit into certain types. Here is a breakdown of those types: http://www.actorpoint.com/acting-articles/acting-type.html Read it and be honest with yourself. Its one of the hardest things you can do, but its also the smartest thing you can do. If you can't be honest with yourself, then get out of showbiz. Cause it can be brutal. So read the character breakdowns and see where you fit. Then look at all your interests. Then meld those things together to create a bigger version of it on stage. 3. Imagine your character in real life. What would he wear? That's what you wear on the stage. You can exaggerate it if you want with brighter colors, or something, but stick to that basic outfit. Don't change it. 4. Now look around at all your magic stuff. As your character forms, you will see tricks that do not fit. Take those and donate them to a young magician in your local club. Take the props that are left and write routines that your character would do with those props. Think about what he would say, do and what music he would listen to. Incorporate all those things into your routines. Don't have any preconceived notions. Start from scratch and be who you are. Again, if you are not honest with yourself, in step 2, this step will be impossible. 5. Now you can start to book another show. You will have more confidence in yourself and your magic as its become more than just part of you. It is you! |
