I produce several modelling balloons, "urrgghhh, it's all running down... Oh it's all balloons now, oh the trick did work after all!"
I then twist a large multiple balloon Octopus for the helper (for want of a more complicated model).
Booyah!

The Fu can is a great way to go, it is cleaner, but you lose the ability to produce something from the can as in the original comedy egg can.

Does anyone else think this is a terrible routine? I'm sorry, but I've never really liked it. Are you getting good reactions from it? I have it and used to do it when I started magic 13 years ago.

I don't think it's terrible but I think there are a lot of other routines I'd do first. However I wouldn't be upset to put it in my show tomorrow.
I guess I am ambivalent about it even though I have it and like it but don't currently use it.

This is one of those routines that goes over extremely well, largely depending upon the performer.
That is why it has achieved a certain "classic" status since the 1960's. Of course, everyone cannot be Don Alan; nor should he/she try to be, but the premise and the simple (proven) method have stood the test of time. Julie |

In the old days I would close my birthday party show with the egg can. Like someone above suggested I made the final load a lot of balloons and would go into ballooning. The egg I used was one of those plastic craft eggs cut in a rough zigzag 2/3 of the way around. It was filled with a yellowish stuff called 'Slime' (don't know if it's still available) looked yucky, but was easy to handle. What really sold the egg was I would keep it in a plastic colored Easter egg wrapped in several tissues. I would get to the point in the routine where it was egg time and bring out the Easter egg with a sly grin. Of course the kids were quick to point out tha it wasn't a real egg. I would tell them that it was only a safe way to carry a real egg so it wouldn't break. Open the Easter egg carefully and hold the fake cradled in the tissue until it's needed. Squeezing the egg one handed while tapping the edge of the can looks pretty good. Let the kids see the slime and scoop up the 'remainder' of the egg shell into the tissue while using the tissue to wipe your fingers (don't forget to wipe your fingers on the helpers shirt too). It reads long, but keep it moving and it works.

I used the Ali Bongo version where you pour in from a milk pitcher and when you lift the can (I used a large plastic opaque drinking glass) a bouquet of spring flowers is on the kid's head.

A real nice routine, thanks to all at the magic warehouse. squirting (fake) Glue in to the can, then go on as described on the childs head, removing the card etc. when revealing the glass full of jumbo marshmallows, pop one in and swallow, the next one is a solid white mouth coil. Loads of fun , without the mess or prep work.
Thanks to Greg for the idea. |
